Tips for replaycing a new power steering pump

  • When replacing a power steering pump the entire hydraulic system needs to be flushed.
  • The system filled with the manufacturer specified power steering fluid.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s specified bleeding procedure to remove air and minimize noise.

Before replacing a power steering pump make sure you have diagnosed the problem properly. Always check the power steering fluid level with the engine off. Running a hydraulic pump without fluid can permanently damage the unit. Inspect the power steering fittings, hoses, reservoir, cooler and pump for leaks.

 Power Steering Pump Power

Function/Working of a Power Steering Pump

The power steering pump is driven by the engine's crankshaft via a belt-pulley mechanism. The pump is usually located in the front of the engine, adjacent to the alternator or AC compressor. The steering pump compresses the hydraulic fluid at a rate directly proportional to the speed of the engine. The pump is built as such to provide the required pressure in different engine conditions such as idling or running at high speeds.

Symptoms of power steering pump failure

1

Difficulty in turing the wheel

The most common symptoms associated with power steering pump failure is you will feel difficulty in turning the steering wheel. The steering wheel of your vehicle will feel very stiff than usual and you will have to use a lot of strength & force just to make a basic turn.

2

Appearance of the power steering

When the power steering fluid which has turned to dark grey indicates oxidationd, it can cause the tubes that move the fluid to gum up, which leads to power steering failure. If you notice foams or bubbles present in the fluid, then it indicates water or air in the power steering line.

3

Fluid levers

If the level of your power steering fluid is low, then it is a sign of a leak, which might be caused due to a failing power steering pump. A low power steering fluid level can also cause the pump to produce abnormal sounds.

4

Squealing sound

If you hear a squealing noise when you turn the steering wheel, or when driving slowly, it means the power steering pump is failing. and when you start the car & hear a clunking or chattering noise under the hood, it is related to the power steering pump failure.

No issues at all & it’s been almost a year! I did have to replace a lower line but other than that, the pump is a top quality performer! 5*’s!

Fixed the problem, took a while to bleed the, system but keep driving and it'll get quieter after a few miles. Unless you've got a leak somewhere else, in which case it'll stay noisy! The pump itself seems fine

We've had ours for 2 months now and the situation is actually worse than before. I am putting fluid in everyday now and my car is still whining. The fluid is coming out of the top from the cap. We replaced the O rings with new ones and that still didn't work. I'm fed up and frustrated!
