Love the product. Hate the hardware. Fit perfectly on my 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with the 5.3’ bed. The hardware provided is horrible (1 specialty bolt). Went to hardware store and got a proper bolt. I believe it was 1/4 x20 course. Fit better than the one it came with. Cost me 12 or 21 cents. Tightened down and the product works flawlessly. Getting the product in place was not too hard. Remove center bolt. Loosen the two T40 bolts. I actually backed each out completely then threaded them in slightly so I would have the most play and room to get the lock in. Just be careful to not misalign anything. Remove one at a time. The middle one that one comes out completely and that’s where you put the new bolt in. If it came with proper hardware this would be 5 stars. 4 stars due to having to drive to hardware store. I have the bed liner and I put the washer on the outside of the liner. The one lone bolt holds the washer liner and lock in place.

This hunk o junk barely fits my 2002 dakota, and the only reason I'm keeping it is because after trying for 15 minutes to remove it from the handle well (after I had spent 30 minutes to jam it in there) I couldn't get it out.Sometimes it the mechanism gets stuck behind the handle and I'll have to spend a couple minutes fishing it out.The first time I locked it I broke one of the keys because of how poor the clearance is for the lock arm.Every time I lock it it torques the door handle (see photo) and makes me squirm every time. While it is unlocked the handle protrudes about an 1/8 inch out whereas it was flush prior to installation.Unfortunately there are no other products out there that I could find for locking a 2002 Dakota so I'm not sure if I could recommend NOT getting this piece of junk, but know that if you do buy it for the aforementioned pickup it is going to fit terribly and be a pain to use.

Great value for the money. Installation instructions are fairly basic, but the actual installation is a bit more complicated. It’s a very tight and tricky process to get it into the opening even with loosening the handle. Be careful tightening the passenger side bolt, checking to make sure the mechanism isn’t shifting and the handle doesn’t get stuck not wanting to open. Just takes a little patience and extra time but it will do the trick securing the tailgate. I do recommend this lock.

I installed this on a 2003 dodge dakota slt. In reading other reviews, I was half expecting to have to do some sort of modification or that it simply wouldn't work. However, I am very pleased to say the opposite. Read and followed the instructions and installed and it works perfectly. Actually fixed my recessed handle. Only thing I did differently from the instructions was that i completely removed all of the bolts and the handle and then reinstalled. Other than that works great and have no complaints at this time.

A nice security addition. Installation is a bit tricky and can be complicated by any tailgate liner you may have previously installed. I had to remove and reinstall the one on mine. It meant a trip to the parts store to get replacement fasteners. Also, since my tailgate is covered by a liner I re-used the original bolt instead of using the security bolt provided. How well the lock holds up to subzero temperatures will be determined soon.

This worked great for my Dodge Dakota that came without a locking tailgate. In the process of moving, I was nervous of not being able to lock the back of my truck and someone could walk away with all of our belongings in the back. This was a great solution. It was extremely easy to install, I did break some of the plastic screws that were on the truck trying to take the plastic bed out, but was able to find more at the local Home Depot for a reasonable price, though this was my fault. Otherwise I am very happy with this device and it gave me a little peace of mind while in the middle of a stressful move.

The instructions on this Pop and Lock (P&L) suggests a very easy 10 minute installation. Not so for me. I own a 2004 Dodge Dakota and encountered problems. . Loosening the back screws wasn’t enough to get it past the handle. I had to remove the trim. After multiple attempts, I discovered that a very thin putty knife inserted at the bottom of the trim would release the bottom tabs and gently pulling on an angle would remove it. After many tries, I either have too many fingers or not enough, I finally got the P&L installed. I then closed the tailgate, and NOTHING. Pulling the handle up did not release the latches! Worse yet I have a bed cover with latches so I had no access to the back of the tailgate. Ever go from anger/frustration to that pit in your stomach. After many, many attempts with my trusty putty knife I dislodged the latches and the tailgate opened. Lesson leader. Make sure the handle operates the latches properly and any bed cover is open before closing the tailgate. One other suggestion, throw the tighten only bolt away. It is very difficult to remove when tightened. I had to use vise grips. After hours of failed attempts I determined that when the P&L is installed according to the instructions on my truck the device is recessed too much and does not allow the handle to move far enough to operate the latches. I solved this by putting a nut on the mounting bolt on the inside of the tailgate. This limited the recessed position of the P&L. It now works perfectly. Ten minutes to install….I don’t think so!
