It was very easy to install the software. The built-in functions for a quick scan are very useful. For added function, I’ve directed the scanner to open my 7200 dpi scans in Camera Raw 2025. The image quality is so high, that you can salvage details even if you need to deeply crop an image. It does take some time for a high-quality scan. At 7200 dpi, I waited for about four minutes.

I'm still learning the ins and outs of this machine, the Plustek OpticFilm 8300i, but it appears to be a high quality unit. It arrived very promptly, and with the included software, SilverFast 9, I was up and running quickly with the use of the new WorkFlowPilot. As I learn more about the software, I'll be tweaking more of the multitude of controls for more controlled results. I'm pretty happy with the hardware and software, and would recommend this machine.

Here's the deets.I purchased Plustek 8300ai 11/24/23, received on 11/30, following much research on film scanners. Due to life events, I just unboxed the unit last weekend 2/15/25. Plustek offers a 1 year warranty so, technically, I'm just shy of 3 months post warranty. After installing product and software the unit didn't work. It powers on and is recognized by windows. My attempts to scan yield different faults/error messages depending on the app used. Not one to give up easily on tech problems, I exhausted all manner of start/restarts, uninstall/reinstall and three different scanner apps as well as numerous online recommendations for connecting the plustek 8300ai. Nothing worked.I contacted tech support on Tues. The agent informed me it appears to be a known defect and Plustek wants me to pay $120 (not including shipping) to repair the 8300ai. I'll acknowledge that the unit is out of warranty and can't prove to Plustek it was only recently unboxed. However, I believe this product defect most likely occurs under warranty and, like my unit, immediately following installation. Plustek should make these repairs on my unit without charge. Plustek should stand by their product.

I'm not a photographer, but the scanner works very well. I've scanned several hundred slides (and thousands to go), but was up & running quickly, with very good results. Was worried the SilverFast software would be too complex, but they included the "WorkFlowPilot" which made it very simple. Scanning is fast if you do not modify the scan (such as remove scratches, dust or improve the image), and if you do enhance the image, can take over 2 minutes (or more) per slide. Again, I'm not an expert, but I'm very happy with the PlusTek scanner & SilverFast software- it's getting the job done for me.

The Silverfast software bundled with this scanner is poor. Inflexible, arcane, lots of loose ends and poor documentation. It is so poor I can’t really evaluate the quality of the scanner. It seems to work ok. Avoid the bundle.

I like the profile and size of this scanner, doesn’t take up too much room on my desk. I use the Silverfast software that comes with this scanner, it’s easy to learn if you have worked with imaging software before. For the novice user it may seem overwhelming. I utilize most of Silverfast’s adjustments to make scans. This scanner is good for those who want more than just a quick scan, and yes this scanner can do quick scans with the alternative super easy to use software. I dial down most of the AI adjustments and try to scan and leave in what is on the film. Would like a window on the top of the scanner to see which frame I’m scanning. The negative carrier takes some time to get used to as well. The scanning process is fairly fast. You can save scanned files in several different formats as well. The color adjustment slides that are included are very helpful in making color adjusted scans. It also scans black and white negative film very well. I avoid over sharpening the images, think the AI gets out of hand quickly with that along with scratch and dust adjustments. The scanner comes with a travel case, I keep it inside there when not using to avoid it collecting dust from sitting on a desk. I have also made prints from the scans and they have came out very well. It’s a good value for the price if you plan on doing lots of scans. I like the Silverfast software too.
