Too much static in the plastic for very small seeds like lobelia, this makes it pretty useless.

Can someone explain the sizes 1 - 5. Is 1 the smallest or the largest? I know I could test it out but would prefer to know the answer.Very pleased with the item which I’m sure going to a help but I want to sow carrot seeds which are very small.

Have you ever tried to plant tiny seeds, like portulaca, poppy, or native grasses, and found them a pain to work with, either because they're stuck to your hand when you try to sow them, or because you spill them all at once by accident? This little device is a great way to keep them safely contained, away from the stickiness of your sweaty hand or the static electricity of a seed packet, until you get them where you want to plant them.Just carefully pour the seeds into the top green compartment and snap on the clear plastic cover. Make sure to position it so that the opening to the narrow chute is closed off until you're ready to sow, so your seeds won't escape! When you get them where you want to sow them, hold the device level (to keep the seeds inside!) and turn the dial marked on the clear lid to the opening size that best matches the seeds you're sowing. That's it!This device isn't foolproof; the lid comes on and off fairly easily, so keep that in mind when you're turning it to open and close the chute and select the opening size. For the price, though, it's a handy little tool that's worth owning. It definitely helped me plant my seeds—especially the tiny ones—at a more controlled rate and in more precise locations.

This is a decent seed shaker. I use this for vegetable seeding and I only use this on smaller seeds, so the 1-3 settings are all I use. It works pretty good for dispensing small seeds to medium sized seeds like: carrot; radish; beet; lettuce; kohlrabi; etc. Any seeds much bigger and I find it easier to plant them by hand. I have an older seed shaker that is the same style as this but I notice this is a little different where the dispenser hole is. My original one is completely open in the seed ramp and the dispenser holes are the only thing dictating the size of seed that comes out. With this one set on the highest setting 5, the opening in the clear plastic lid/dispenser is actually a bit wider then the opening in the green plastic so you couldn't actually get as big of a seed through it as the dial hole would allow.
