Shaft acts as a pilot for the cutting head and helps remove excess glue from the tube. Shaft will fit into a drill chuck or lathe chuck. Barrel trimming and squaring is an essential step in penturning projects to ensure a proper fit between the pen kit hardware parts and the turned blank.

I used this trimmer today on some ebony and rock maple and it works very well. Cut through the ebony with ease.

The metal 7mm shank is already wearing away on the cutting edge used for clearing the glue. I've done 20 pens with it and the carbide also doesn't seem to do well with resin.

Up until now I've been using a standard pen mill but this unit is a big improvement. I found I have to feed the mill in slowly because it cuts much faster and smoother than the standard mill. I can highly recommend this unit.

I never write reviews, but this barrel trimmer changed my mind. It is AMAZING. It is incredibly sharp and makes short work of trimming blanks. Heavy duty, should last years. Yes, it's more expensive, but will worth the extra bucks.

Before I purchased that I read some reviews that claimed it chatters too much, or bites too hard, or some other complaint. When I’m using a steel trimmer, I find that the faster, the better. With this carbide trimmer, exactly the opposite is true. Especially useful for materials like acrylic, or stabilized wood, a very slow rotation and light touch works wonders.Since buying this I have learned to sharpen the steel trimmers (it’s VERY easy) so now I use the steel most often and the carbide for materials that tend to either dull or gum up the steel. What I’m saying is that it’s VERY worthwhile to own both. I will confirm, however, that if you try to use this the same way as a steel trimmer, i.e. spinning fast and pushing hard against the material, it will be almost impossible to hold on to, will make a sloppy mess, and may break chunks out of your blank.

I have used hss trimmers for a while and thought I would try this because I was tired of sharpening the hss so much. I am very impressed with how fast and effortless this thing cuts! I highly recommend it!

I got one of the better known pen turning starter kits and the barrel trimmer was unsurprisingly cheap. The set screw stripped almost immediately and the thing started smoking the wood within a couple pens.I got this one to replace it and I nearly ruined my first pen because it cuts so well. I’d gotten used to having to really bear down on the drill to get the old one to cut and this one went through the blank like butter.Definitely recommend if you are a pen turner. This one being carbide, I doubt I’ll need to replace it any time soon, but when I do need another one I’m getting this one again.
