Pioneer Blu-ray drives are the go-to drive for many users including for professional use.

Pioneer Blu-ray drives are the go-to drive for many users including for professional use, to the extent that Pioneer optical drives have become the drives of choice.

There are many reasons for this—Pioneer devices have many unique features that take advantage of long-cultivated knowledge and technology accumulated in the development of optical drives, as well as being one of the few manufacturers to not only design in-house the optical pickup, one of the most important parts in the design of optical drives, but to use in-house development and manufacture for the optical drive itself.

Here, we’ll introduce the reasons that Pioneer’s Blu-ray drives are the drives of choice for a wide range of users.

Optical disc drive technology, performance, and quality perfected through more than 40+ experience

The history of Pioneer optical disc drives started with the development of LaserDiscs, and the company continued with the development and manufacture of all optical disc drives, including for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. This optical disc drive technology and expertise accumulated over many years is fundamental to the performance and quality of current Pioneer Blu-ray drives.

exhaustive quality control resulting from fully in-house development

Pioneer uses in-house development and manufacture for everything—from optical pickups through to disc transport mechanisms, control circuitry for these, and even the chassis. This drive condenses our expertise in optical disc technology going back to the era of the LaserDisc, enabling stable read and write operations.

Used for data storage in medical, government, library, broadcast, business, and educational sectors

Pioneer Blu-ray drives are renowned for their high writing quality, and are used for storage of historical documents such as those in libraries and museums, examination and treatment data in medical institutions, academic content and research data in educational institutions, and master data at broadcasters. The drives are also used for the storage of confidential documents, statistical data, and other data in government offices.

PureRead tech reproduces original sound from scratched, used CDs.

In previous drives, when a read error occurred because of problems such as scratches or fingerprints on music CDs, this section with the error was interpolated and the sound approximated from this. Pioneer Blu-ray drives include PureRead technology, a unique technology for accurately reading data from music CDs. This technology automatically determines the state of discs that have scratches and makes adjustments accordingly to use an optimal read method, thus providing reading of music CDs that is as close as possible to the original.

Unique mechanism for industry-leading stability in writing and read operations

Different to the predominant tray-type used in slim external USB drives, our unique slot loading mechanism provides ease-of-use with an ingenious, novel configuration. Additionally, the high-speed stationary type incorporates a disc resonance stabilizer that also calculates airflow when the disc is rotating at high speeds. This mechanism provides more stable writing. "A range of other innovations provide industry-leading stability in writing and read operations. "

Unique design combining luxury and functionality

Pioneer’s unique design blends a luxurious design with the functionality of a space-saving clamshell type that opens and closes vertically, as well as a slot loading type that enables easy loading and removal of discs.

Works great for backing up my Blu-Ray disks. Reasonable price once you keep in mind that a $40 drive might work once or twice, but not again. I appreciate the detachable USB cable and the inclusion of a USB-A to -C adapter.

As all pioneer Blu-ray players I've purchased, it is well crafted, reliable and functions as advertised as far as I can test it. (side note) many software companies claim to be able to perform the 4k and HDR disc play back, I have tried many and no software allows 4k play back with any 4k and HDR players. This is not a pioneer issue but should be mentioned since every company seems to claim it is capable of those play back options but not a single one of them have proven they are able.)

Like its clamshell access to discs versus tray drive. Blu-ray Discs play nice on pc with player software that can be downloaded for windows. This is the 2nd drive purchased.

Plugs right in using USB-C. Unfussy and reads reasonably well from lightly to moderately damaged discs. Speeds are good but not blindingly fast. Not the quietest at high speeds but at or below 2x you can barely hear it. Holds up to long periods of sustained use.

I initially plugged this into a USB dock that I was having issues with and every burn I attempted, failed. I investigated and found that the VIA driver the dock works with has issues with Windows 10, disconnecting and reconnecting constantly, so I replaced the dock and ever since then, it has burned flawlessly and even reads/writes the disks that had failed so I can reuse them. I like that the disk insert is completely lo-tech mechanical (there are no mechanisms that can fail when you put a disk in or take one out.). You can also visually inspect the inside of the drive before inserting a disk. A must have for parents of children who like sliding things into where they don't belong. Speed is average, but burns are accurate. It's portable so I can use it with a number of my devices. I replaced an old LG internal drive that stopped recognizing Blu-ray disks and now I have a Blu-ray burner that can go anywhere. Very happy. Just wish this went on sale more often.

I have a small library of Blu-Ray DVDs. My new system was a mini-PC without a USB Blu-Ray drive. The drive was able to play my DVD and Blu-Ray discs. There were some glitches/stuttering during play-back which I believe is attributed to the new system. The play-back software is dated, but worked on my Win11 box. Overall, installation was straight forward and I was watching videos without any installation issues.

My newest PC was unable to have a blu-ray drive installed with it, and I often watch movies and TV shows from my collection when I'm not working in my home office, so I wanted an external drive. This one was exactly what I needed. Couldn't be simpler to use; just plug into an open USB port, the PC detects it, and you're ready to watch regular DVD or blu-ray movies/shows (**NO 4K, though...just be aware of that.**)I haven't tried running any of my legacy PC games that are still on physical media, but I'm willing to bet those will work fine, as well. It's quick to recognize whatever disk is inserted, I can watch movies and shows without any lag or playback issues. It's lightweight and very portable, so it's great if you're mobile and working with a laptop. You just can't go wrong with this exterior drive.

Also alles gut. Robust ist es jedenfalls. Und wenn ich unterwegs mit meinem Notebook bin ist es super wenn ich einen Videofilm sehen kann ( im Zug mit der DB unterwegs ).

If I could rate it any lower I would. Simply put, it doesn't work. I went through an hour of installing all the software from an extremely shady Japanese website just for this to freeze up and crash every time I get 12 seconds into a bluray. I cannot recommend this product for anyone.

Overall it's a good portable Blu-ray or DVD drive for Windows. But it is contraindicated the description that it is compatible with Mac OS. There is no native nor a supplied software to support Blu-ray. One needs to buy Mac OS Blu-ray software to utilize the Blu-ray feather of the the drive and defeat the purpose of paying more for the drive. Mac OS Blu-ray software could run well over 50.00 dollars in app store.
