I was so excited that there was a pre-toned neutral painting panel out there. But it was VERY absorbent for oil painting and the texture was way to pronounced for the work I like to do. After many layers I was able to get a good result, but it was a painful process for how I paint. If you like a lot of texture and absorbancy, this may work great for you.

I'll admit it! I'm not a painter. I'm a jewelry artist, and these boards were purchased solely to be used as backgrounds for photos. I love that they're not reflective and are very neutral colors to provide the best shots of reflective materials. I have kept a couple in the plastic wrap for shots, but I really love these boards. For painters, there are the cardboard backed canvas and not canvas on stretcher boards, so I imagine that if you try to paint on them, the material is going to curl or control from the moisture. However, for my purposes as a neutral backing, they are perfect!!

These were a long time coming -- I think they were dispatched by boxing turtle, or maybe a snail -- but worth it. The boards on which the canvases are mounted is sturdy, the priming is good, and the color a nice uniform medium gray. While I like the color for what it is -- it'll actually work very well for a project I had in mind -- I realized something else upon receiving these. If you're working outdoors or under bright light, a pure white canvas can cause a bit of eye strain. The fact that these are a darker color makes them less reflective, and therefore easier on the eyes (nobody wants to wear sunglasses while they're painting, after all).

For a lower price point 3-pack of Canvas Panels, these are probably some of the highest quality I've seen, especially when you take into account they are toned. Upon opening these fabulous looking canvas panels, I was quite impressed though. All three in the pack are uniform and not one imperfection to note. All three measure perfecting at the 9x12 they should. The toned priming is archival (a very good point to note) and the pack that I got was the Grey. They do offer 4 different colors of toned primer, of which I completely dig.I would love to say I've had time to actually get these bad Boyz into use, but I have not. Life has thrown a lot of curve balls lately with an immediate family member's emergency near-death illness... so family has had to be the priority. The panels themselves are nice and sturdy with very little give. The grey tone (the archival primer) is even and applied evenly across the panel. The canvas has an even texture that's enough to give enough tooth, but not so much you have to fight it and it over takes any texture you are trying to create in your piece.Once I get to actually use them, I'll be able to comment on the quality of the prime. If it's any good, one shouldn't have to gesso. It defeats the the purpose of the prime (and in this case, a toned primer). Gesso is a primer. Yet, many low quality canvas products still require it... so we will see. My hopes are really high with these, so I will update once I can get down and dirty with them. They are not getting put away until I can!In comparison to the lower end products that can be found at the local arts & craft shops, these do have a higher price point. Yet, these are far more inexpensive and affordable than the traditional "artist" products that I've grown up with over the years and have used (and tend to be a bit of an art snob about, lol). These totally seem worth the try and I'll be updating once I do get to actually try them out and see what that primed surface is like.

Nice boards and the grey tone is nice. As you can see from the last picture, I included a black gesso board so you can see the comparison. My only issue was that it took way too long for shipping (approximately 3 weeks) therefore the 4 stars.

I have not used these canvases for an actual painting, but I am currently using one for making a color chart comparison of the white oil paints I have on hand. I have to say that using this “Studio Gray’ tone really lets you see the true value, tint and saturation of each color for comparison purposes. Great texture as well. No priming required. The paint goes on smoothly, spreading nicely without gaps that require going back over with another layer. Translucent colors require more layers of course, but once mixed with an opaque color, one layer does the trick. I’m extremely pleased with how well the paint takes to this canvas. Can’t wait to actually use one for some real artwork.

The boards are nice and sturdy, so not likely to warp. The gray tone of the board means I can "skip" painting a ground for my painting. Since the label says it's multimedia, I swatched non-paint mediums: oil pastel, soft pastel. I even tried watercolor, just to see what would happen. So for the oil pastel and soft pastels, it's pretty good. You'll still need some sort of fixative when you're done with your work. For the watercolors, it took a while to dry. I wouldn't use watercolor on these boards anyway since they're gray, but it's doable, it just would take a while to complete the painting.
