Instructions

Uses
  • Restore old, grey, or dingy decking or other wood
  • Remove rust from tools, machinery, or other metal surfaces
  • Clear water-born rust stains from concrete
  • Can be used as an ingredient in industrial-grade laundry detergents and stain removal
How to use it

Always use PPE when handling!

Always add acid to water, not water to acid!

For wood applications, use two cups of acid crystals per gallon of hot water. Preclean of any dirt, debris, etc. Spray or apply evenly across wood surface with a mop or bristle brush and let sit 20-30 min or until dry. Rinse deck with clean water.

What is it?

Oxalic acid, also known as ethanedioic acid, can be found naturally found in plants such as buckwheat and spinach, and is a crystalline powder.

Oxalic acid is widely known for its ability to chemically bind to rust and remove it from various surfaces including metals and concrete. It is also extremely popular for bleaching and brightening wood.

How does it work?

When Oxalic Acid, with the chemical formula 3H2C2O4, comes into contact with rust, it displaces the iron oxide (rust) and forms iron oxalate and water. This is a water-soluble salt, which can then easily be rinsed away.

Wood cleaning and bleaching

Popular and effective for wood bleaching, including decking. It blasts through greying or weathered layers, revealing bright and beautiful wood beneath.

Cleaning Tools and Metals

Preclean with soap and water.

Metal parts can be soaked in a solution of ten parts water to one part Oxalic acid. It may be necessary to soak for up to a day to remove all the rust.

For more limited or direct applications, mix 1 tablespoon oxalic acid into 1 cup of warm water. Apply the solution with a toothbrush, scrubbing lightly.

Cleaning Concrete Stains

Mix one-half cup of the powder in a gallon of warm water and mop it on the stain. Let it sit and work for 5-10 minutes, keeping the stain wet, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush and rinse with fresh water.

Oxalic Acid can be used to clean and polish stones and crystals

Cleaning or Polishing Rocks and Crystals

Oxalic is popularly used for cleaning certain minerals such as quartz, which is commonly contaminated by iron rust. Note, it is not to be used with every type of mineral so check with a professional if you're unsure.

Concentration of solution varies by quantity and degree of staining of the mineral. For light staining start with 2 tablespoons of oxalic acid in 1/2 gal water. For more power or a large number of crystals, increase up to 2 cups oxalic dissolved in 2 gal water. Note: Too much oxalic can cause quartz to yellow slightly.

Place solution and minerals in a covered plastic bucket or container. Allow to sit for one to several days. It can be placed in the sun for heavy staining or speeding the process, but be careful to do this in a well-ventilated area or avoid breathing fumes that can be created by the heat.

Always use protective equipment including gloves and goggles

Wanted something to clean my concrete driveway from mold and rust stains. This product did both in one application, didn't need a pressure washer! Applied with a hose end garden sprayer, then rinsed about 15 minutes after done spraying. Driveway looks new again.

Moisture got into the packaging. I had to smack it around to get it back to a powder.

Product came so compressed, I wasn’t sure it was 8lbs. After uncompressing , I followed the instructions, 1 cup to 1 gal of warm water.Product worked as expected, I have been using this product from another source for years and but this brand is better and at a better price! I have only been using it to remove rust stains from well water which is my irrigation water. But will try out on other uses as well . Recommend this company and product.

Update: This year I used hot water from the tap, filled a 1 gallon plastic bottle and added 16 oz. of the acid and the hot water in a 5 gallon bucket and it dissolved quickly. I also put some Dawn liquid dish soap to help it cling to the surface. I added a before and after picture so you can see how well it works. No scrubbing, just spray on (I use a 1.5 gal. Garden pump sprayer), wait a few minutes and rinse. I did use a pressure washer first to remove the heavy scum. I use this to remove the algae growth from the bottom of my boat at the end of the season (it sits in the water from May to October. The only issue I have is that it doesn't dissolve easily -it's recommended to use hot water but I'm using a 5 gallon bucket which doesn't fit in the sink. But, that stated, it does a great job of removing the scum and algae. I pour the mix into a garden sprayer (a gallon at a time) and spray onto the bottom of the boat and then hose if off a few minutes later. I rarely need a brush. This is a much more economical solution than buying the ready made products sold in squirt bottles.

My husband is really into antique license plates and signs. Our barn ceiling, walls and stairs are covered in plates. We bought this bc it was recommended in his license plate club online (yes, it actually exists) for removing rust and stains from the metal plates. It works really well, I just wish I hadn’t bought such an enormous tub bc you only use a couple teaspoons at a time for what he’s doing. But I am now using it to try to remove the rust stains on my cast iron tubs and sinks.
