I needed to recover a large amount of files from an old hard drive that refused to boot up, despite my best efforts. I was rather sceptical that this External Hard Drive Enclosure would work but I took a chance and ordered it, mainly based on the reasonable price. I have to say, it far exceeded my expectations. It was extremely easy to use and the dead drive appeared instantly in the file explorer. I was able to transfer all the files I needed from the old drive to my other PC in less than 5 minutes.

This enclosure works perfectly and was ready to go in less than a minute. It's a tool-less design so all you really have to do is slide off the cover, pop in your drive, and close it up. My drive sat a bit loose in the enclosure, but they provide two foam pads (one thick, one thin) to make the fit more snug. I stuck the thick pad down on the lid towards the end away from the ports, and it immediately stopped any rattling and clunking when moving it around. The lid feels a bit too easy to slide off, which isn't terribly confidence inspiring. However it still seems to hold well even if the latch disengages. I wasn't able to feel much wiggle room when I pulled on the cover, you have to slide it all the way out for it to come off. For the price, I'll give it a pass on this point. In the enclosure my hard drive mounts like any other removable storage, and it fully supports SMART. The drive supports USB 3 over its USB-C port, which is more than sufficient for my mechanical drive. Using the included USB-A to USB-C cable, I hit about 150 MB/s read speeds, which is pretty close to the drive's performance over SATA. I didn't bother to test write speeds since it's an SMR drive, so it would be limited by the drive itself. I noticed read speeds dropping after a few benchmarks, though I'm not sure whether that's because of the enclosure or the drive itself. The drive will even go into standby after a period of inactivity, just like it did when I had it in my desktop.Do note that pressing the power button will cause the drive to immediately power off without confirmation. It doesn't unmount or wait until it's finished writing, it will instantly cut power to the drive. I wished it would've taken at least a long press to power off.To summarize, I'm pretty happy with this drive, and it seems to be one of the few nicer enclosures that supports USB-C.

The Orico External Drive enclosure has one job and that is to give access to external HDD/SSDs for data storage and retrieval. Those who have had many computers (me) will likely have several old drives from them with data they want to access. It's nice that one can use 3.5" and 2.5" SATA III drives, and they are easy to remove so a different drive can be attached. However, I removed a star because the enclosure could be improved with vent holes to allow heat to escape easily. Vent holes may not be so necessary with 2.5" drives since they produce less heat but the 3.5" HDD I installed in it was getting very hot when the cover was in place.I will use this more as a dock anyway, leaving the case cover off (which slides on and off) when a 3.5" HDD is used so heat can escape. As a dock, I can remove the 3.5" HDD and connect a 2.5" SSD when I want redundant data storage as backups. Easy pessy.Overall, a good product that I would buy again.

No tools are a big plus. Doesn’t work for NAS at least not for my netgear router but I have plenty of uses for this drive enclosure.

Among the different products on this page, this review is for the Orico single hard drive enclosure - Model 3588 USB3.0 (UAB 3.0 & SATA). I received a sample for test and evaluation. These caddies have become essential accessories as people upgrade computers on a regular basis. The new pc usually comes with a new internal hard drive, but it would be a waste to scrap your previous one along with the old tower. So the solution is to extract your old drive and slip it into a case like this one, which allows you to turn any 3.5” internal SATA hard drive into a portable external drive for just the cost of the enclosure. This gives you additional storage for backups, and it is also invaluable to retrieve data in case of computer failure.Included in the package was the drive enclosure, a USB cable (1 m long), a power cord (1.5 m) with 12V adapter for direct connection to a wall outlet , a foam pad if needed to stabilize the drive, and a manual in English. The manual could be better, both in content and presentation. The writing is tiny and I had to scan and enlarge each page, but it does contain adequate instructions in approximate English. However, if you've used one before, installation is intuitive. Just remember to do the safe-remove when you want to disconnect it.This is one of the easiest models I have come across. No tools are needed. The plastic casing opens by sliding the bottom sideways, you then align the contacts and push the drive home. For thinner drives you can use the foam provided (I did not use it). You then close it back up, connect the enclosure to your new pc (or laptop) with the supplied cables and switch on. A LED light flashes red and when it turns steady blue, you are ready to access your new external drive in the usual way. The top of the drive (with the brand name and logo) is made of metal to disperse heat more efficiently. If you have a USB 3.0 port (blue), you can take advantage of its fastest speed, but it is also retro-compatible to older standards. My pc does not have 3.0 ports available, so the read-write speeds I'm getting are adequate but not ground-shaking. Hoever, used with the laptop's 3.0 port, everything gets much faster.I have used this caddy to back up 770 GB of data onto a WD Blue hard drive in preparation for upgrading to Win 10. It made the whole thing much less traumatic and now I have a very useful 1 TB external drive where I store my weekly backups. Heat dissipation is very good, although the drive does feel warm but comparable to similar products. So far the product is performing impeccably.
