Have used this on a few cars now and I find it easy to use/calibrate and accurate.Build quality feels good. Comes with a handy case to protect it when in your tool box and clear well written instructions.Generally quite happy with this and good enough for a 5 star rating.

This is a decent hydrometer. I have used the other methods in past and have struggled. This seems to be a better experience and a bit easier to read for me. It does take practice to get use to it though.

Optical Hydrometer Optical Brix Refractometer for Wine Making, Dual Scale - Brix 0-40% & Alcohol 0-25% Vol, Wine Refractometer for Measuring Sugar Content and Predicting Wine Alcohol DegreeMy refractometer has been such a great help in giving me confidence in my home brewing efforts. I used one extensively last fall to determine when to pick my grapes. Unfortunately, that one broke so I have been trying to find another. This one has all you need to get confident in the outcome of your fermenting efforts. Before getting started make sure to zero out the meter by putting some distilled water on the viewer. Remove the little rubber cap beside the hinge and use the included screwdriver to make sure the meter reads 0.Once it is calibrated, you can be assured of your Brix % reading and the expected Alcohol by Volume after fermenting. This reading is for a hard apple cider I am making from apple juice. I also checked it against a Specific Gravity reading and both were in agreement as to expected ABV.Happy fermenting!

The refractometer came with a plastic case and well written manual. The first thing I did was check it's calibration, it was right on zero with distilled water. I checked it against a few commercial spirits and it seems accurate. Just for the sake of checking - I checked a high abv dry wine and just like the product description says, it is not suitable for wine.

You need some distilled / De-ionised water initally to set this up/calibrate it to zero.Once done, then a few drops of the antifreeze , ad-blue mix etc on the plate, hold to the light and look through the eyepiece, which rotates to focus it, and read off the relevant scale. It looks a bit confusing and complex with the various scales at first, but once you just focus on the relevant one it is easy to see the level. The anti-freeze shows the scales on prtotection in Celcius, for G11 and G12/13 too.I tried some new G12 (red) anti-freeze whihc was rated at -36c and it read -36.5c, so spot on (the anti-freeze is likely a touch understated so cover themselves).Comes in a solid storage case.Be aware though the main body can unscrew from the reading unit, its not a secure screw on - yoiu can tell because the blue/white reading line will not be horizontal with the scale - easy to tighten it back, but also to over tighten it, so its not perfectly made/assembled imo, hence 4*For £17 (Dec '24) it seems ok value, given the case etc, if you need to test any of these liquids freuently, but perhaps not for a one off occassionally, better to get the simple dip tests.Comes with a dropper and screwdriver to adjust the calibration screw, plus small but clear instructions.

Very nice quality. The materials used are very nice. It comes with its own storage box and pipette to help distribute the liquid onto the refractometer lens. The measurements were very accurate right out of the box and did not require any calibration making it very easy to use immediately. Definitely worth the money and actually a very reasonable price for what you are getting.
