It certainly provides close focusing for the 16-50mm kit lens on the Sony a6500. Even closer when you add a short extension tube. I was under the impression that I was purchasing a 40.5mm threaded diopter rather than a larger optic with adapters. A 40.5-58mm step-up ring is provided but once it is attached, the rear cap no longer fits, forcing one to either trust the too large chintzy leather draw string bag it ships in or search for some other alternative to prevent scratches when not attached to the camera.Jan 2019 update-when using this diopter to photograph insects, you don't notice any distortion but when shooting a subject that is square, the pincushion distortion is extreme. I own several 2 element diopters made by Nikon and Canon, of various sizes from 52 to 77mm. None of them exhibit anything close to this incredible amount of distortion! I have downgraded to two stars.

Im pretty new at photography but i found this lense pretty cool to use not to mention the price is awesome gets the job done.Photos are crisp and close if you got unshaky hands. The 5 stars because with the adaptor screwed on lense did not come with cover...so you always have dissasemble both parts to cover both sides of lense.Extra work for no reason. The lense is awesome I recommend.

Oh my lawd, I have literally never made a better purchase for my camera. They say it affects photo quality because of the edges but unless someone's paying you, it doesn't matter. Either way, 10/10 would recommend for every single person who owns a camera. I love taking pictures of bugs, food, leaves, anything close up and if you know how to use it, it's astounding. And to boot, it's made of metal and not plastic. Do yourself a favor and get one, 0 problems even after like a year of use. (Photos attached are a Redds Blueberry bottle logo and some gnocci)

You need to understand that macro is hard! It requires you to have good camera support(tripod or similar) for steady shot, consider lighting, as you will be close to subjects blocking lots of light. shallow depth of field is ridiculous, hence you need to close aperture, exacerbating light issue etc... Your ability to focus also takes on much smaller range as is to be expected. On my Sony 28mm F2, range dropped to something like 10cm-25cm from original 29cm to infinityNow, if you understand that macro is hard, so you don't expect a miracle, this is the best toy ever for $25 or so! I'm not using word toy in a disparaging way, just that you can enjoy yourself and experiment for super low cash outlay, and if you like what you're getting, you can go and get a proper macro lens.Build of this lens add-on looks good, optical quality seems just fine looking at the global picture (didn't pixel peep), and there is much to enjoy in the process.Laowa and Opteka seem to be the same company, and Laowa (Venus) is doing some truly amazing stuff with lenses that never existed before, like wide angle macro, wide angle - 'zero' distortion etc...I'm putting effort in this review (I usually don't do reviews) because I wish them all the best and to succeed.

I shoot with a Sony A3000 using a 1.8 50mm prime 99% of the time as a portrait photographer and love it. I mostly shoot family lifestyle sessions, but I've getting more into newborn photography. Just got this about 2 days ago and I've been playing around with it as a cheaper option to a macro lens. A few things:It's very hard to focus, and even more so if you like to shoot wide open. I would recommend the highest aperture you can while shooting with this to ensure you can get sharp images. The images seem a bit fuzzy overall. There's definitely some chromatic aberration with this lens, and even in manual focus its hard to get super sharp images (see above). But for $25 its a fun thing to throw on and play with. I'll update once I test it out on a newborn shoot. All of these images were taken with a 50mm prime, f2.5-3.5 with varying shutter speeds and iso.

A fun thing to use, I put it on the Sony 1650 lens that came with the A6000. Came with two adapters 40.5 to 58 and 49 to 58. It gets the detail but really have to move around to get it. I was about 2-4 inches from the target to get my focus. If I remember pass 24mm? you won't see the adapter. Samples are uploaded.

One gets what one pays for, but at this price point you really can't go wrong. By the saying of which I mean that this little close-up lens isn't perfect. It seems to reduce depth-of-field to a very narrow band even in good lighting conditions, and there is a very obvious dark ring round the image when the lens to which it's attached is at a wide angle. These things are to be expected I guess because of how much I *didn't* pay. HOWEVER! For the price (less than $40CA) this is a great little accessory! I'll say this: it's very sturdily built, with an encouraging amount of weight in one's hand indicating robust manufacture. Made to fit a 58mm filter thread, it comes with adapter rings for 40.5mm and 49mm lenses so you can adapt it to pretty much whatever you like, although anything bigger than 58mm would be, I guess, a poor match. In addition to the adapters it comes with a handy little draw-string bag and a cleaning cloth. Anyway I tried it out straight away using my wee budgie as subject material and I was gobsmacked at the detail it brings to life! Although my Sony NEX-5R with its 18-55mm kit lens has a macro mode, this makes it even better. It captures details in the bird's plumage which are far too small to be visible to the naked eye, such as his eyelashes. Yes, budgies have eyelashes; who knew? But I digress. Like I said, it's not perfect but I'm going to give it a very happy five stars because it's such a favourable price. If you need a close-up lens but are feeling the pinch in this economy, this is an ideal solution until you can save for something a little more high end, which you might even find you don't have to. Highly recommended. :-)

The adapter rings included with it weren't right. Two fit the Camera type I selected (Sony, 49mm and 40.5mm) and adapted them to 58mm, and the other one adapted the 52mm diopter thread size to 55mm. No combination of these can attach it.From what I can tell holding this lens in place, the optical quality is not very good with a ton of vignetting and chromatic aberration, and a huge loss of sharpness, which prevents you from cropping the bad edges out.

I received my lens a day early (yay!) and was super excited to start playing with it last night. I'm using it with a Sony Nex-3, which is now about eight years old (upgrades are expensive and it still works great). It took me a few attempts to figure out exactly how it works and after that I had a great time taking pictures of things in my house, mainly my cats. For $25 I am very impressed with how well it works. I tried it on both my standard lens and my wide angle lens and thought the two different results were really cool. I can't wait to play with it more!Side note: extremely hard to photograph your own eye.

I bought this first kinda skeptical of it since I didn't understand how things like this worked also off my first few shots with nothing in focus.I was pleasantly surprised when I sat down with it and fiddled around with the settings which made me wonder... Why buy a macro tube? With those you lose your connectivity for the most part to the lens, thus not being able to adjust setting; this on the other hand allows you to even have auto focus.Overall I think this is a really neat addition to a kit lens for macro photography on the cheap. Won't beat a proper macro but also doesn't cause the wallet to scream either.Pros+Cheap+Works with a variety on lens types+Allows full function of the lens+For the price the pictures are pretty greatCons-Weight-Need to take it off for normal photography-Strong vignetting when at lowest zoom (Fixed by zooming in)

Surprisingly nice qualify for the price but there are a few qualifiers. The area in focus is super tiny with my a6000 55-210mm lens (example photos attached) unless you really close the aperture which means alternative lighting or a high ISO is needed. Also, the macro attachment comes with an adaptor to fit the 55mm-210mm Sony lens, this isn't meant for the kit lens and won't fit. And the macro lens adaptor needs to be screwed onto the lens prior to screwing in to the 55mm lens EACH TIME YOU USE IT; once you are done taking macro shots it needs to be unscrewed from the 55mm lens then disassembled from the macro lens if you want to be able to put the protective cap back on to protect the glass. It's just an extra two annoying steps and means you need to keep it in a little baggie with the separate part as opposed to being able to just store in your camera bag ready to go but with the ends capped like any other lens. In the end it's worth the hassle and added maybe another 60 seconds of work to attach and remove from the lens.
