The Nicholson needle file set is an assortment of 12 files in a variety of shapes that are 6-1/4" long and have double-cut grade 2 Swiss pattern teeth for use in making jewelry, dies, watches, and fine tools. The Swiss pattern teeth are double-cut for rapid material removal, with high precision for work on delicate or intricate parts. The files have a coarseness grade of 2 for a smooth finish. The built-in handle of each file is round and knurled for a secure grip. The set comes in a vinyl pouch for storage.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I had a cheapo bulk set of files that I was using before and these needle files cut faster than the full size files from the cheapo set, and leave a better finish. Don't get me wrong these are pricey, but you do get value for the spend

If you want specific cuts, smooth sanding and perfect abrasions on plastic and resign miniatures then these files are for you.As they cost 100 to 200 dollars they are quite the investment but no other files I have bought are sharp and fine enough to work on 28mm, 32mm, 54mm and 72mm models without causing more damage than help. I don't need to use Abrasive film anymore. The previous cheep needle files i used were only good for scoring off large imperfections or mold lines. These files are great but if you are only going to get 1 set of files for miniatures I recommend the Nicholson 4 inch Cut 2 files first. These are larger 5.25 inch files and while they are sharp enough to get into every place these are sized more perfectly for large modeling like Tanks, Airplanes and other structures that are larger than 2 inches.

I've used Nicholson needle files for ages. They are always have the smoothest cutting action. This is what the pros use. Grobet/Teborg are not bad either. I wouldn't bother with any others.

Very nice files but it only had 11 files when I received it instead of the advertised 12.

I'm a gunsmithing student so I use these files almost every day and absolutely love them, one of the best purchases I have made on amazon. they cut very well and have some flex so you don't have to worry to much about snapping them. On the flip side they do flex some so don't expect them to be as ridged as a regular file. These files are an exceptional quality.

These are very high performing files, despite their appearance. These tools are tiny and simple, and looking at them in the package is deceptive. The quality is on par with larger Nicholson products. Nice selection of profiles and very sharp, really a pleasure to use. Night and day compared to the cheap imports.

Expensive - but you get what you pay for. I use these for gunsmithing. Just about the perfect size for working on my hand guns and the large variety is very handy. #2 is great for roughing stuff out but I use stones to finish. A second, finer set of these would be useful if you don't already have a bunch of finer, different stones.Lots of people in the reviews complain about how much good files cost and then complain more when they buy cheap files and they don't last. Properly used, these should last for quite a while.

As a watchmaker I'm very demanding on the quality of my tools. I needed a set of number 4 needle files for a project and I had a hard time finding files this size that were even sold by cut number. That's one sign of a quality file, if its sold by cut number. These are great files. I have another set of #2 needle files and they were much more expensive and of equal quality. I still had to safe edge two of the files in this kit. I always wish files came with a mirror safe edge but they simply don't. The slotting file was not perfectly flat when I polished the safe edges but it was not to hard to flatten out. these files came with some kind of harden oil coating that had to be removed. This coating was prob to avoid rust. I know these seem extremely expensive but you get what you pay for and for precision work these are great for the price, and trust me, I know expensive tools.
