I have owned many laptops over the years, and my favorites are the work station replacements, the W and P series. I spend twice as much on a laptop, and use it twice as long as anybody else wood. Such is the case of my W540 from the early 2010's. About a year ago I stuffed this computer into the closet and bought a P17, i9, 4K screen, behemoth of a laptop, for way too much $$$. Why? More speed? No. Bigger screen. Nah, only by an inch. New stylish case? We are talking Lenovo, No. I went out and dropped thousands of dollars on a new machine because 1, I spend twice as much as needed, and 2, because of the absolute worst trackpad design (on the W540) in the history of any man/machine interface. Gawd, I hated that thing. Fast-forward through a year of blissful track padding on my P17, and I needed a little PC I could let other people borrow for Zoom calls where I volunteer. You know, something I would not shed a tear over if it got stolen. Eureka! Pull that W540 out of the closet and fix it up. I dropped in a small SSD, new OS, installed Zoom, and in all that I was able to re-experience that POS kludge pad! People will hate me for loaning them this computer. That's when I came across the hardware which is the subject of this review - an upgraded trackpad! No questions asked, clicked buy now, and waited by the mailbox. Ripped the box open, popped it into my W540 making it a W541, and it didn't work. No big deal, opened device manager, found the Synaptics track pad driver, deleted it, searched for new hardware, Windows dutifully installed the new driver, reboot and voila - a W541. Played with this for a couple hours. Then the W541 went to sleep, and when it woke up, the track pad buttons would not work. Redid the driver as described above, the buttons worked. Rebooted, the buttons did not work. Rinse, lather, repeat. Same results. So, at reboot, the W541 driver does not survive. This is minor, there are solutions for this all over this thread, and I'll fix it later. I'm not worried. So for a few minutes, I am using a mouse. So much better than a W540 kludge pad. So even if it doesn't work, you are better off getting rid of the kludge pad. Now, for phase two of this project. Go disassemble the W540 kludge pad you just took out. I posted a photo. Carefully take it apart. Study the mechanism. Study the layers. Peel off the trackpad cover, and marvel at the complexity of that circuit board, all those little capacitors made from PCB traces. Ponder, that this can be sold for the price of a decent six-pack of beer - after the manufacturer, the wholesaler, the distributor, all those shipping charges, and Amazon's final footprint including shipping. That's amazing. Now, I just have to keep my wife from using the W541. She will remark, "this works great, why didn't you do this a year ago and save all that money?" Great question dear. "For my photo enhancement work, it isn't as fast...." I will post the final steps needed to enable the buttons later. For now, order this!One last comment. If you have not swapped one of these out before or done similar work on laptop computers - watch a video. The ribbon cables are delicate. This is not hard, but precision is required. Watch a video.UPDATE DAY 2. I cannot get the button to work. I have tried several different solutions by different posters. Zero success. The button will work for hours, but does not survive a power cycle. It is usable, with the very annoying process of using a mouse to reset the driver every morning. I feel pretty stupid, but was somewhat relieved to read of someone else's tale of working on this for over a year. I say, still buy it even if it won't work - because having no buttons is better than dealing with crappy buttons on the kludge pad. It forces you to use a mouse. I am collecting as many articles as I can on the different procedures, and will take them, along with the W540 and a case of beer, over to my neighbors. Will update!Update 12 15 2023. Still unable to prevent a Windows update or a reboot from installing the W540 driver. Whenever a reboot/update occurs, I have to plug in a mouse and manually reinstall the W541 driver. This touchpad is so much better than stock, I'm glad I did it. It would be nice if Lenovo released a proper driver for this mod, afterall, they were decent enough to allow the W541 part in the W540. Meanwhile, I carry a mouse, because I never know when the trackpad button will quit working.

Replaced the clunkpad on my W540 with this unit. Other reviewers have commented on authenticity; I can't tell, but Linux detects it as a Synaptics touchpad, and it feels solidly constructed, and works well, including multi-touch. Good value and a great improvement over the W540's stock pad.

I was hassistant in buying this touchpad after reading the reviews, with people having responsive issues. I went a head and bought it anyway and I'm glad I did. It's plug and play you really don't need anything else. Right after I installed it on my Thinkpad W541 it worked perfectly no extra drivers to install. It's just as accurate and responsive as my original touchpad. If anyone are having issues with this touch pad, then I encourage them to explore different avenues, because after a month and over 50 reboots I haven't had any problems with it.

I purchased this to replace the trackpad without the independent buttons but one big trackpad that functions as mutiple buttons. It worked very well for about a year but one of the the mouse button failed and does not work. I have used multiple different Thinkpads with trackpads. And compared to the OEM, this product seems to be less robust. I am hoping to get an OEM part this time...

don't listen to those who say this product is not good because this touchpad is precise and works like an original product

I installed this as an upgrade to my T440's original pad. Took a minute to install as you have to remove the motherboard, but if you're comfortable building PC's and whatnot there were no surprises or anything.It's not as nice as the touchpad on my P1, but is much better than the stock T440 touchpad.I think it was well worth the money. It's pretty cheap, took an hour to install, and will extend the life of this 'ol girl!

The touchpad that I recieved was exactly as I expected, it was recognized as a Synaptics device after I installed the Thinkpad T450 drivers on my T440p. Please note that you must edit the T450 driver files prior to installing this or else it may not work properly (a Google search should help you out). Tracking is excellenct and I have had no issues so far. The buttons are responsive and the touchpad surface is even better than the original which was seriously surprising. Given the other reviews, it's possible that your mileage may vary, but the product that I recieved was certainly of comparable quality to any other T450 trackpad I've seen. The only thing I've noticed is that the left click is *slightly* quiter/less tacticle than the right click, something that I don't notice unless I'm really looking for it.

The first one i got came with the left button broken, Likely due to shipping. They sent me out a replacement within a couple days. I have installed it by following youtube videos, Which was fairly simple other then those pesky ribbon cables are a pain as you need to be very delicate as not to brake anything. The install went smoothly, and after uninstalling the old driver and installing a new one everything now works with no issues. Confirmed synaptic. It was easy enough to disassemble the laptop and drop the part in - protip, look up how to take apart the palm rest instead of t440p track pad replacement tutorials, you'll save yourself a lot of headache. After that download the synaptic drivers. Some of the buttons will not work out of the box due to something something something with the registry. Google Nick Heim t440p trackpad and follow his instructions in making a REG file (copy paste into text file and save as appropriate format) and run it and all buttons will work. You don't have to go into the registry yourself. Works like a charm. This is the smooth as silk lenovo clunkpad that I remember loving. I didn't realize how much more I enjoy using a laptop now that I got rid of that trash original pad. 100% approve.

Works, perfect fit to replace the crappy stock touchpad. However beware that it does not appear to be a genuine Synaptics device. So I had to uninstall the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver and use the default Windows 10 PS/2 compatible mouse driver otherwise my mouse buttons would not work...which was the whole point of replacing the stock touchpad in the first place. Not using the Synaptics driver may lead you to lose some advanced functions.

I purchased this particular trackpad because other reviewers indicated that no additional software drivers were needed for a Lenovo T450S. NOTE that no cable is provided, so be very careful when removing and reinstalling the old cable. Installation was involved, and most of the videos on the Internet only show the trackpad being installed in some model other than the T450S. The most difficult part for me was removing and installing the keyboard, and again, the videos leave out lots of tiny but important details. As a result, I nicked a cable and had to install another keyboard. The old keyboard was dirty and had minor problems, though, so no great loss.
