The mid 1980s were the beginning of the end for distributors in regard to new cars. The Buick grand nationals started using coil pack technology while many other GM vehicles were using dual tower coil packs sometimes known as waste spark systems. Others followed. Other common applications came from Mitsubishi and eventually Chrysler systems. MSD's DIS ignition controls are designed for engines with coil pack, waste spark ignition systems. The DIS-2 has two channels, to fire two coil packs, while the DIS-4 is capable of firing up to four coil packs, even 4 individual coils. Each control delivers full power capacitive discharge sparks from idle through racing RPM. Below 3, 00 RPM there is a series of multiple sparks that last for up to 20 degrees of crank shaft rotation to improve idle, starting and throttle response. These also come with many adjustable features through rotary dials. Includes over rev and hole shot protection, plus a step retard.

I put this on my 1998 S/C Mustang and had almost the same results... Unit lasted 8 months then the idle became rough. It seemed like it had an infrequent miss here and there. Then at month 13, one channel quit completely and the car wouldn't run at all. Using the bypass the car started and worked great. MSD told me one of my two tach adapters had failed. I replaced it (another $50 bucks) and nothing changed. Using only 3 of the 4 channels I tried the previously unused channel which didn't work either. MSD would not warranty the product and could not offer to repair since they said the unit was encased in epoxy. I ended up throwing it away. Like setting fire to $750 bucks.I plan to use 3 of their older style 6A boxes (one for each coil pack) as I need something with this much boost. Duno how to recreate the timing retard since it will be 1/3rd the timing per box. Have to do the math...I would not purchase this product again. Simply not reliable enough and too expensive a risk.

I added this to my '97 SVT Cobra when I added the Vortech S/C. Workedgreat for about 6-8 months, then I started haveing to re-set it evry 6-8 weeks, no big deal right?, Then it started not starting if the car sat for more than 3 days, not the battery lots of cranking power, so I took it back to Extreme Auto In Canoga park. They found nothing wrong and it was starting OK again. Took it home, drove it everday, things were OK, drove it every other day, things were OK, drove it every third day, WOULD NOT START!! Back to Extreme, again they found nothing wrong. Home again and exactly same thing!! Took it back to Extreme, they put it back to STOCK and no more trouble agter 8 months. SO BUY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!
