The body is stiff enough to do the job, and the points at the end both hold it in place, and etch the wood. The pencil is nice, but I found I preferred to etch the surface of the wood and then follow along with a 0.5mm pencil so that I could see it.

The pencil holder was damaged when we open the package. Can’t use it anymore unless I find a metal welder to fix it.

Review for the 12" compass divider.This divider is very sloppy, I can move the two halves about 1/4" (See the photos) Additionally most of the grinding looks like it was done with an angle grinder. This is not a precision machine tool, There are gouges in the metal, and the rivet that holds the two parts together looks like it was hit with a hammer multiple times. Perhaps, in some vain effort to make it less sloppy.I returned it and will order a more expensive/ Better quality one. I gave it three stars as it does function as a measuring device ( You can set the points on the two areas you want to measure, lock it down, and then measure the distance between the two points.) But it is not useful for drawing circles, nor for stepping off a consistent location for drilling holes.

Mr. Pen is known for having well-made well valued PRODUCTS, however, this compass blew my mind! Not only was it made with premium steel, but it Performs like a well oiled machine like the products made to last in years gone by! Large sturdy compass great for mandalas

I needed a compass for a home carpentry project. The smaller size would have worked well for this project but I decided to go with the larger size so it would also work for a potential upcoming project. It was easy to set the points to the correct size using an architect's scale but holding the point and dragging the scribe point with the circles being rather small could have benefitted from a third hand to help steady it. Having only my own two hands available at the time, I scribed a portion of the circle and then repeated, overlapping each portion of the arc until the circle was complete, meeting the original scribe mark perfectly. The scribed circle measured correctly, as did several other arcs made afterward. If you do most of your work on your own and don't need the large size, I recommend considering the smaller size but if you need the larger size at times, go with the 12" version and be patient and careful with scribing your arcs. 4.5*, rounded up.

Es un buen producto, llegó tal cual el modelo mostrado en las fotos, material resitente y de calidad, quizá sea que el me me enviaron tenía un buen tiempo en stock y el material en algunas partes presenta unas pequeñas manchas negruzcas; es el único detalle, no afecta su funcionamiento. There are several brands and non-brands of woodworking compasses available on Amazon. I chose this one for two reasons: it had some "branding", which often means "a company that wishes to develop a reputation and thus maybe they care a little bit more"; and price, which was actually less than the no-name versions of this tool.LET'S BE CLEAR - this is no "precision instrument". It is not even in the same ballgame as something like a Starrett tool. This is mass-production, Chinese hand-labor factory work. The grinding is only so-so, there are a couple rough/sharp spots, and the points came to me slightly bent. It also appears they either tried to case-harden the points OR they burned them with too much heat while grinding. The metal appears to be stainless, except for the knob (painted metal) and the curved slide, which is stamped and appears to be regular steel. The pencil holder (ring/tube) was a little snug and some debris from its (rubber?) lining prevented insertion of the pencil, at first, but then it went right in. The compass came slathered in a light machine oil, as is both common AND desirable with tools that spend not a little time crossing the salty ocean inside a shipping container.NOW, despite any shortcomings, for a bit less than $12, this is a FANTASTIC WORKER TOOL. The opening and closing is smooth enough, the locking screw to set your dimension holds fast, and the heavy weight of the tool just feels right. It opens to about 240mm (depending on how far out your pencil is adjusted).All in all, if you don't go into this thinking Starrett, you'll be very happy to use this tool in your work.
