The MH125FAV is the least powerful of Mr. Heater's line of propane forced-air heaters for smaller jobs (see the MH55FAV and the MH85FAV). The heater gives you 35,000 Btu--enough to heat 800 square feet. Though the larger models give you more Btus, each heater in the line shares the same basic features, including an automatic shutoff with loss of flame or power supply and a high-output fan that circulates heat quickly. Hooking the heater up to the 20-pound propane cylinder (not included) is easy, and the 10-foot hose and regulator are included. CSA certified. One-year limited warranty.--Josh Dettweiler

Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?

  • Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
  • Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
  • Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
  • Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.

Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

I live in an apartment and have a little detached garage (1 small car barely fits) that i use to do wood work and during the winter it gets really cold so I wanted a heater to quickly heat it up and that's exactly what I got with this Mr heater. It pumps out the heat just make sure there's fresh air coming in and make sure there's no wind hitting it cuz it stops it from getting f as hot as it could. It heats the little garage up quick and can make it get hot enough that you start shedding layers. I use it to quickly raise the temperature then I have a Mr buddy(?) Heater that I switch over to because it uses less propane and is easier to maintain a consistent temp. I recommend this to anyone looking to warm up a small area for sure. It is also alot quieter than most of the other ones like it.

Excellent bang for the buck and so far works like a charm with almost one 20# tank used up. Is a little noisy but not nearly so much as some of the other styles I have been around. Use it to heat up a 700 sf garage fast to help out an anemic electric heater. Would recommend to anyone looking for a nice midsize heater.

Nice product with only one complaint. First, the good: Our heat starting going out on Jan.3, two days before the artic blast hit the south. All the heaters locally were gone, but thanks to Amazon Prime, we were only expecting to suffer one day before this heater arrived. Our house is single story, approximately 2100 sq.ft., and this heater kept the main areas of our house around 71 degrees with an outside temp of 12. We got about 13 hours off a 20lb propane tank. Overall, very please with the heater itself. Now, the bad: It is "suppose" to start with the built in igniter, but after 30 or 40 tries right out of the box, I gave up and manually lit it up.Besides the faulty igniter, this heater was fantastic and I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

I love this unit. I put an additon on the house, 400 sq feet with a 9 foot ceiling. In the middle of the winter I actually have the temp up to 98 degrees. The contractor told me to leave it run while the plaster dried. I came out to check after my evening meal and saw the 98 degrees. Needless to say I turned it off.Easy to fire up, plenty of heat and very resonable in price. Now I use it in the garage that is not heated. It's a two car garage and again, plenty of heat. It replaced an old kerosene parlor heater I use to use. Just fire it up, go for a cup of tea and the garage is nice and toastie. If you need extra heat to do some work, get this unit.Barry

I bought this heater to heat my detached garage while I was doing maintenance on my vehicles and bicycles. My garage is a sloppy remodel of a cinder block single car garage, so half of it is wood constructed The space is closely equivalent to an American-style side-by-side two car garage, though if I wanted to park two cars in my garage it would have to be end-to-end. There are large gaps around most of the doors and the windows are only single pane, so by no means weather tight. Thankfully the roof doesn't leak... knock on the wood half.If you have a relatively small space (two car garage) and don't want to use odorous kerosene, I would strongly suggest this propane burner. Easy start-up and no odor!

I HAD THIS HEATER IN MY PET SHOP AND IT DID WELL BUT THE PET SHOP IS IN A SWAP MEET AND NOT HEATED AT ALL.THE AREA IT WARMED UP WAS ONLY IF YOU STOOD RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT.MY SHOP IS ABOUT 300 SQ. FT. AND IT DID NOT EVER HEAT UP THAT WHOLE SPACE.

This was purchased to use in a small basement during the winter. It heats quite well and is easy to use, but the exhaust is so strong that my boyfriend ended up with headaches after extended use. He still used it though, so he either thought it was not too bad or he really wanted to escape me and my kids! :)

It took a good hour to get this thing going - holding in the 'pilot' button got real old after the first minute... and out went the flame. Then a minute longer, and out again.Eventually, having held in the button until my thumbs turned blue, it stayed on long enough for me to stretch my hands out. pffffffft.and over... and over...If it stays lit long enough this unit will work nicely to warm an uninsulated 2 car garage with 13' ceilings in under an hour.Of course, you'll have crippled hands and be almost deaf from the fan & roar of the flame - but heck!Good value, a little on the noisy side, but once you break the thermocouple in, it's alright.
