Not sure if it's because I have a real mochajete from Mexico but this was very light cheap. I didn't care for it at all. I was going to send it back, but I end up giving it to my mom to crush her pills. She said it didn't do a great job either.But oh well, you win some and you lose some

The mortar and pestle is exactly what I expected and perfect for what I plan to use it for. The reason is I am giving this a lower rating is because in at least two pictures, a spoon is included in the package according to the picture, which is why I chose this product over the other options, some, at the time I ordered were lower in price for what appeared to be an identical product. When my first order arrived in a crushed box, I thought it had just fallen out, but no, the replacement product arrived, also in a slightly less crushed flimsy box, it also minus the spoon. After having to read very far down the product page, I found confirmation that indeed there was never a spoon included in the package. Part of the misunderstanding is on me for not reading the entire page, but I feel that the product page is very deceptive. Bottom line, if you wanted a spoon that fits the curvature of the bowl, buy a different product.

Although the mortar and pestle look like stone, they are actually a cast, relatively hard, resin. As to how it functions grinding herbs, I haven't a clue; I bought it as a decorative piece for my office, and it serves its purpose well.
