I use these for buffing bare metal projects and it works well with a little compound. I would use it for buffing a painted finish unless you can slow your grinder down a bit.

I have an old brass ashtray that has not been polished in a decade. The buffing wheel and some green compound made short work of the tarnish. The wheel polished a couple square inches in seconds. Some things to consider:The guard needed to be removed on my 4.5 inch grinder. The polishing of small, tight areas is not conducive to using an angle grinder. A little big and unwieldy. A variable speed one might work better.Polishing a large steel surface is the type of job best suited to an angle grinder with a buffing wheel. Brass is almost too soft to use this method. However, it comes up high shine with little effortThe pads are stiff and hold up well. They load up with compoud quickly. For the right purpose they will do a great job. No complaints about the pads.

I had never used a angle grinder for buffing a project. These pads fit both of my grinders perfectly. Using them on custom wind chimes that use copper, brass, aluminum and steel for chimes. There are two compounds included in the kit, the blizzard compound (white) works great on the softer metals at lower speeds. The "steel" compound (green) works great on the harder metals like steel and chrome. The pads maintain their form fairly well even at slower speeds. Having the multiple pad helps prevent cross contaminating the different compounds on the same pad. I found they work really well if the chime is still on the lathe. The pad material is soft enough to allow some light scratches to be buffed out of an old magnifying glass. These are a good value for the money.Full disclosure commitment:I often rely heavily on reviews before purchasing new items or products. I must admit, I am pretty surprised at the quality of these felt polishing wheels. They are SOLIDLY packed felt and don't compress hardly at all. I installed one on my grinder and spun it up to top speed and used it dry on some aluminum. The disk ran true with very little vibration and held it shape well with contact. The weel face is properly shaped with a slight convex to it. They should wear in and give a nice, full contact patch in no time. If I were the seller/manufacturer of these wheels, I would not let these out the door without my name on them like these are. (They look totally generic with no printing at all) these are actually something they should be proud of. Nothing fancy, Just a good quality tool. And at $2 each in a pack of 10 the price is very reasonable. The ONLY issue I could find was some of the wheels have a small amount of plastic flash or burr on the mounting hole that could throw the wheel out of balance a little if you clamped down on it. I just removed it with a pocketknife. It would be nice if it wasn't there but, I'm not going to take a star off for such a small issue.

These are great for polishing and cleaning, and are the right balance of hardness. The closest product I can think of that feels similar as far as hardness goes is a pool table top or bumpers. There isn't a lot of give in them, and sometimes that's what you want. The edges of the disk are likewise hard.If you search here for certain products, you'll see entry after entry of what appears to be identical (or nearly so) products from overseas, just with a different name and price on it. I thought that's what I had here when I saw more round wool felt disks. When I received them, I compared them (these new ones on the left, the ones I already had from another manufacturer on the right), and you'll see that the plastic is the same down to the same nubs, just a different color. They are the same wool, the same hardness, same in every other way that I can see except for the thickness of the wool felt. However, these are very slightly thicker, maybe by ~1/8".The issue I have is the polishing compound bars are NOT "1.1" x 8" x 0.78" as listed in the description, which is why I thought I'd give these particular disks a shot in the first place. The two bars are a fraction of that size, and at approximately 1" x 1" x 3", they aren't even the advertised size in TOTAL. So for that reason, (i.e. I specifically ordered these particular disks because it had the added bonus of the polishing compound), I feel misled and taken advantage of. That's the reason for the mediocre rating, not that there's anything wrong with the disks themselves. They're so small, it's going to be tricky even using them. I recommend ordering the wool felt disks from wherever you want, including these since they sell more disks (10 without compound, or 5 plus the compound for the same price), and order your polishing compound separately, from wherever you prefer.
