I obviously did NOT expect to get a giant chunk of diamond in this set, but I figured the "10" sample would probably be synthetic silicon carbide, and that's what it looks like.I did expect the rest of the samples to be legitimate. The "1" sample, though, is actually harder than the "2" and "3" samples; it scratched both of them! (I'm pretty sure the "2" gypsum sample is authentic, and I'm completely sure about the "3" calcite, which shows the birefringence I'd expect.) It also looks like the "8" (topaz) and "9" (corundum) actually scratch EACH OTHER, so I'm wondering if one of them is the wrong material as well. These are nice sized samples, and they come with a nice streak plate. It just looks like some of them aren't what they're supposed to be. If I figure out what the questionable samples really are, I'll follow up here.

I got this set because I wanted some reference specimens with which to compare rock finds. I'm not sure about some of the specimens, especially the 1 and 10 hardness - the tacl (1) should be easily scratched by a fingernail, but I was unable to made any mark on the provided piece with my nails. The 'diamond' (10) is definitely not a diamond - it may be carborundum, which has Mohs of 9-9.5, but it should be identified as such and not misleadingly labeled as something else. Overall this is a compact sized kit that comes with a nice little white streak plate, but be aware the extreme ends of the scale may not be entirely accurate for comparison purposes.
