Got this for my grandson and he really enjoyed putting it together. He was involved in robotics and this was integrated into one of the robots. Good fun and learning tool.

There is nothing that says, "Keep the wires you cut off of the through-solder components because you will have to use them to connect the sound board at a 90 degree angle". I solder from left to right, and that was the last part to attach. I used a ton of flux because the solder was not attaching to it. If I did it again I'd put that piece on first. I soldered pins in the pos/neg and attached the raspi with wires. Didn't work. Tried batteries from other projects...still didn't work. Basically this is missing crucial instructions on using leftover wires to connect the sound board, because most beginners are not going to pick up soldering the way you'd need to without using the wires. Make sure you have something that will power it up when you finish soldering it too, otherwise you have a nice little sculpture for your desk.

It did come with instructions that an electrician could probably read, and this may be perfect for an electrical student, but I just wanted to practice my soldering, so I found a youtube tutorial and it came together great. Worked perfectly first time. The switches are weird and aren't marked off and on and I didn't see any arrows or any markings to indicate that, but it's just a silly toy and doesn't matter to me. The sounds it makes are very unpleasant, exactly as you'd expect from this kind of device which I find hysterical.RE Power: I was able to make a 3v battery pack for it out of a 2-AA powered personal fan from my local dollar store by removing the motor and soldering wire leads to the positive and negative terminals and just stuffing them into the correct sockets on the board. I figure it was worth the investment cause I'll probably make more of these little things and it'll be handy to have a battery pack.

I'll have to refer to the pictures on the Amazon item page. I prefer it when kits like this come with good photographic instructions -- even if cheap black-and-white photocopies -- because there are a couple of head scratchers when putting this together. What do you do with the brown circuit that has the "mysterious" black-gooed SMT IC on it? How do you connect that to the other circuit? I see there is a slot cut in the larger board, does the daughterboard mount at 90 degrees? Instructions would be very helpful with this kind of thing. I'd be worried I'd screw this up without a good picture of it assembled or set of pictures showing stages of assembly. However, I gave it 5 stars because I love to see cheap music/sound DIY kits, because they are so hackable. Can't wait to hear it chirp. I plan to use a microcontroller to flip the switches by wiring the pads for the tiny switches to a PIC or GPIO via a "dupont style" jumper or header. Seems to have all of the parts -- maybe one is missing? not sure. seems not, but I won't fully know until I get it put together.

Ad says 6 years old and up. I would say more like 10 year olds. Also not a Music player, and sound maker. Good soldering skill maker, but one part soldered in an unconventional way why I would rate 10 years old. Does need adult supervision. I would recomend this to someone learning to solder. Wish would have explained circut better and the 5 pin programing, no information provided.

Note: As my soldering iron keeps burning out on me, this is just a working review of the kit rather than of the built product. I am overall, a self taught hobbyist so my knowledge is just a layman's.This is a simple DIY music box kit based on two NAND Texas instruments logic chips and a black blob circuit. The PCB itself is sturdy and well built. While it came complete, with no missing pieces, the components themselves (with the exception of the circuit) are also readily available, nothing propietary, so replacing any lost, defective or dropped component is as simple as going to one of the 3 remaining RadioShacks in the state. Packaging itself could be better though. All the components came in one rather flimsy dime bag together with the PCB with no instructions. I docked a star of my review because of that.While the values are labeled very clearly on the PCB itself, the resistors were not labeled in their strip, meaning that unless you can identify resistors based on the color bands, you will need a multimeter. This is only a problem for two specific resistors, though. Simple brain logic can tell you were most of the resistors go where. Overall, though, the kit is very well made. While it did not include any instructions, the PCB itself was very well labeled, with all values and polarities written onto the board itself (with the exception of a stray ceramic capacitor that has to be welded to the bottom of the blob circuit). The isntructions are mostly important for the how to solder the extra circuit though. I would recommend this for a beginner as a simple afternoon project. This one looks like it could be completed in about an hour (if my soldering iron didn't keep carbonizing the tip...)PROs:+ Simple kit for a hobbyist, with no missing pieces+ PCB is very detailed with its labels, values and polaritiesCONS- Does not come with instructions- Packaging could be a little better.Other notes:* I was able to contact the seller for instructions. They were very polite and helpful in that regard.* This kit need an external power source to work. Its operating Voltage is simply 4.5-5 V so it can be powered with as little as 3 AA batteries.* You may need a multimeter or an identification chart to place some of the resistors.* The packaging is labelled as compatible with Arduino
