I bought this for a steam radiator. I learned that you change the settings based on number of radiators and distance from the boiler in the Hartford loop. You try to balance having a smaller vent hole close to the boiler to keep pressure to get the steam further down the line. Adjusting the vent hole larger on radiators further from the boiler. The steam valve is well made and does exactly as advertised. In my case it was more of a wild guess on the setting however I must have gotten lucky as it vents off the air, then closes and traps the steam as in my logic it should.

This was a big help with bleeding the radiators. It does it by itself. Small drop of water comes out. It keeps the heat flowing through without me doing the work. I keep a small bucket to catch any water dripping on the floor. It's a very Small amount of water. It would take 5 months to fill the small bucket half way.

As some of the other reviews have stated, the most important factor when purchasing these steam release valves is to make sure that you are using the correct one for the radiator and its location. For some background, my radiators previously had the Hoffman bullet-style valves, and they worked fine until I got a new boiler installed. Suddenly the radiators on the second floor ran ridiculously hot, to the point where I had to completely close them, my main radiator in the dining room (which was in the same room as the thermostat) wouldn't heat up because the valve would constantly get clogged/waterlogged, another room on the first floor ran hot and spewed water... everything was a mess.First step: I looked up which valve # went in which room, and swapped all the bullet valves out for these Midline round valves. I made sure to put #4's in the dining room and the kitchen (which is in close proximity to the thermostat), and #6 valves on the second floor. I also put a couple of #6's in two rooms on the first floor that were farthest from the furnace (which is in the basement).Once the furnace kicked on, with all the new valves in place, it was like a curtain had been lifted, the radiators all finally worked as intended with the new, much more efficient furnace. The #4 valve, in particular, worked so well in the dining room that the radiator heated up quickly with minimal knocking/hammering. No doubt the radiator had excess water in it, but the heating system equalized itself to the new valves, and since then the all the radiators have run efficiently with no knocking. One HUGE plus that I have found since using the new Midline #4 valves (in conjunction with the others) is that I have not had to manually add water to my boiler. At all. I have now been running the new valves on my radiators since January and we're towards the end of April as I type this, and I have not had to add water to my boiler in almost 4 months. I was constantly adding water with the old Hoffman valves, but with the new Midline valves it is amazing how efficiently the boiler runs. The valves are extremely easy to screw on, although on a couple I used plumber's tape on the threads because they were slightly loose, but turning them another full revolution was almost impossible and had me fearful of breaking the thread; some plumber's tape around the thread solved that problem and ensured they screwed in nice and tight, but not overly so.As I stated in the title, there is a caveat to get the Midline #4 valve working properly, and that is to make sure you are installing it on the correct radiator and location. If you do that, I think you will find that it will work great. It certainly has worked wonders for my furnace and radiators. 100% recommended.

End of October. *&*&% HVAC guy still has not showed up.I put together a one-page worksheet detailing which cap is in which room. The new valves work like a charm. Would buy again in a minute. Have different sizes for different rooms. Been working on different, making sure the proper cap is on the proper valve in each room.
