About this item

  • 13" Artist Series for Taku Hirano
  • Special Designed Rim
  • Strong Mounting Clamp
  • Sticks Not Necessary
  • High Gloss Black Finish

Taku hirano wanted to add timbale accents and fills while playing on congas and multi percussion set-ups, without needing sticks. His signature hand-bale now makes that possible! The retaining rim of the hand-bale is uniquely made with one half traditionally shaped, while the other half of the rim is recessed below the shell. This opens the timbale to bongo style hand techniques that easily produce an unmistakably crisp timbale sound. Stick techniques are possible on the traditionally rimmed portion of the drum.

Me encantó. Ahora solo falta aprender a tocarlo con las manos y/o agregándolo a mis timbales y tocándolo con las baquetas. Excelente calidad.

The Meinl Hand-Bale drum is an outstanding new arrival to the world of hand drums. It is meant to be a Latin drum. The great drummer Taku Hirano wanted to add this sort of sound to his drum set. Meinle designed this drum based on his criteria. It is a wonderful new addition. This drum, despite its simplicity, quite versatile. The (synthetic) head skin of this drum can be stretched to varying degrees and, hence, it can produce a wide scale of sounds. It took me several experiments to get the sound that I prefer, but the mechanical tuning of this drum is very easy. There are two things to note here. First, I think the drum is meant to produce one type of beat (not the typical Dum and Tek of the other hand drums); but if tuned correctly, one can get an approximation of the Dum and Tek (I was able to do that). Second, this drum is best used with a stand. Meinle designed a stand that is specific for the Bale-Drum; but the stand costs more than the drum (it's worth it and I recommend purchasing the stand as well). However, the drum comes with a clasp which allows the drum to be mounted on a standard drum kit. If you wants to add a wonderful and unique sound to your typical Latin hand-drumming set, this drum is highly recommended.

Liked product. Had odd sized mounting bracket. Had to spend over 50 dollars to get mount that would work to mount drum on stand.

As a strict hand-percussionist in a church worship team, I'm always on the look out for new and different instruments to help add "colour" to my basic gear. This hand drum is a perfect complement to a standard bongo/conga setup . Used judiciously, it's ideal for accents and for a bit of drama alike. The sound is just like a tradition timbale's , and cuts through a band's various voices easily. My only word of caution : If you ARE playing in a primarily acoustic group, be careful with your force, because this little drum is loud !

Great adition to your percussion or drum set. Perfect for both hand-percussionists because of the 180º recessed rim but useful as a drum set add-on drum too.The mount adapts to any standard "Z" or straight percussion rod or even a drumset "L" rod clamp. You can also put it on a snare stand and use the attached mount to hold a rod for jamblocks and cowbells.Would be great to have other sizes to have a full timbale bare-hand-playable set (I would buy a 14" if available).

Not bad at all. If you are a die hard conga player then this could be your baby. I'm working with a finite amount of real estate and physical space is at a premium. I found that I just liked using the Roland Handsonic's timbale sound. Already using the Handsonic, and although that is electronic, there are no micing issues, less space, and you know what sound you'll be getting every time. If you are not using a Handsonic and just want the physical drum, then yeah this is awesome. Nice how it has a lip on one side, but not the other, so its perfect for your hands, or sticks. Great sound, but its HEAVY. Get a strong clamp & mounting post.
