About this item

  • LEARN TO PLAY IN MINUTES: strike the center with your whole hand for deep, resonant bass and near the rim with your fingers for high-pitched slap tones; this djembe is a perfect instrument for getting the confidence to play percussion with no experience
  • WHY IT MATTERS: a lot of fun musical adventures don't require time-consuming practice on a drum set; with the Meinl Headliner Djembe, you can play in drum circles, acoustic shows with bands, jam with friends and family, or teach students about rhythm
  • ZOOM IN: the shell is hand made out of a single piece of solid mahogany from certified managed forests (NOT glued together wood pieces); the exterior is beautifully hand carved and looks great for decoration in your home or studio
  • DRIVING THE SOUND: you can get a lot of different sounds from its traditional goat skin rawhide head; this head produces a classic warm, yet clear tone while being remarkably durable
  • OF NOTE: the djembe comes tuned and ready to play right out of the box; the West African Mali Weave rope tuning system holds a long-lasting pitch, and we pre-stretch the ropes so it sounds great right away (comes with tuning instructions)
  • BY THE NUMBERS: mahogany shell measures 10" wide x 20" tall and weighs about 9.5 lbs; goat skin head measures 10" with an 8" playing area (head is slightly larger than the playing area because it wraps around and down the rim)
  • THE BOTTOM LINE: this is your chance to grab a handmade, all-purpose, sturdy djembe that easily produces a wide range of sound indoors or outside; it's not intimidating to play—even if you're a beginner—and looks beautiful on display
  • THE BIG PICTURE: Meinl is a family-owned musical instrument manufacturer and brand established 1951 in Germany; our expert German designers have deep relationships with our builders to ensure you're delivered the absolute finest quality

The hand carved shells feature a gouged surface reminiscent of sun-dappled water. This exterior texture also makes the djembe easy to grip between the knees. Hand selected goat heads are secured and tuned by the traditional Mali-Weave system made of high quality nylon rope . MEINL Headliner djembes have outstanding acoustic properties reaching from deep, resonant bass notes to cutting, high-pitched slaps, and are ready to pick up and play right out of the box. For added protection of your instrument, MEINL specializes in carrying bags for their percussion products. The MEINL djembe gig bag (Model# MSTDJB) is perfect for all djembe sizes and is equipped with heavy duty nylon stitching and a strong shoulder strap.

It looks nice, sounds nice and has very good tones. It's sturdy with a little heft but not too heavy if carried in the optional carry bag over your shoulder.

Great for beginners. Strings needed tightening but it’s great after it was done

This is the first drum I've ever bought. I avoided the obviously cheap ones, but still thought only $100 for a drum was probably too little for something of quality (I'm a musician, so I know that in general you get what you pay for). But I'm shocked at how nice this is! Very good quality, nice looking, and most importantly, great sounding. Glad I went with this choice.

My sons bought me a small djembe for one of my birthdays, and I had so much fun with it, I thought I'd enjoy a larger one as well. Didn't want to spend a fortune, so settled on this one. Now, I have no idea what a djembe of this size is supposed to sound like, but this has a very nice base tone that I enjoy, and I have a great time playing it along with the other one to entertain myself. Fortunately, my son had a snare drum stand at home I could set the larger djembe in (I used a tall cardboard box to build a stand for the smaller one so I could stand and play it), and that works for me a bit better than sitting with it, but I'm sure that would work fine as well.

This is my first purchase of a djembe and I couldn't have been more pleased! The craftsmanship and the hand carving is spectacular. More importantly to me is the bass sound is wonderfully deep - which is what I was looking for. Being a 60 year old beginner, it has been a joy to learn and the drum itself makes me sound like I know what I am doing! Throw on some Rusted Root live - https://www.amazon.com/Rusted-Root-Live/dp/B00069A6FE and jam away!

The surface is small yet easy to play. I was having a difficult time with the slap sound of the djembe that I had been learning on. When I bought this one I was very happy to discover that the slap comes so easy. This is a well crafted instrument. My only gripe is that there is wood putty on a spot and it is actually a lighter color than the wood. It is only cosmetic and no big deal. It's a great little djembe.

Great sounding and great looking drum. I love that it is carved out of a solid piece of wood and not many pieces glued together. The fact it is made in Indonesia and not China is a plus too. For the price it is a fine drum. I got a discount for taking a warehouse deal with a damaged box. The drum inside was undamaged!

We ordered this for our daughter for Christmas. It is solid wood. It has a thick goat skin head that will withstand her learning how to djembe without being afraid she is going to break it. Rope tuned. It is a 10 in - great sounds. Very reasonable price for such good quality. My daughter will enjoy this drum for years to come. She is 7.

I recently went to a slackline and yoga festival called BREATHE fest in Chicago, and while there I witnessed a structured drum circle. The instructors were very forthcoming with information, and had me wanting a djembe as soon as i left. So, not hoping for much, i pulled up a few drums on amazon, and low and behold i found a bunch. After reading the reviews, i chose to go with the Meinl due to its construction quality, and hoped for the best. After playing it for a few weeks, i really do love this drum. i just wish i bought a bigger head! the bass resonance is really great, but i was very impressed with the high slap tones once i tuned it. Overall, a great product. i would DEF recommend this to anybody, top notch products from Meinl. Cant wait to buy more djembes!
