A small amount of steel balls inside the drum delivers a fantastic sound effect when rolled over the clear synthetic head. The hand selected pre-tuned goat skin head on the top playing surface provides unmatched tones with just the right amount of sustain. A sealing port located on the side of the Rubber Wood shell allows the player to control the amount of steel balls inside the drum. Frame drums are an excellent main rhythmic foundation for Folk, Irish, World and Celtic music, but have applications in any musical setting that the player sees fit.

Its ocean sounds are great and the drum can be played in different ways for a lively or calming experience. The size and weight make it easy to handle. You can adjust the sound by removing some of the pellets, but I used them all. The construction and materials are beautiful. Very well made, high quality instrument.

I bought this because I like to do sound baths for my family. I play this with my gong and Tibetan bowls. The 22” one can get quite loud but you can control the volume and mute it by placing on a small meditation pillow and tipping the sides. Really does sound like the ocean, and if you play it with the yellow resonant side facing up, there is this undertone that sounds almost angelic. Love to play and mesmerizing to hear. Great addition to my sound Bath repertoire!

The 16” Ocean Drum is a quality product, looks beautiful, sounds amazing, arrived on time, and was packaged well. I was disappointed that Meinl doesn’t carry a bag for this item, because I would have rather spent my money with their company first, but the drum, itself, definitely deserves 5 stars. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

There are other ocean drums in Amazon for less money, but I deliberately chose a name brand and paid more for better quality and I was glad I did. I've been using rain sticks to simulate wave sounds but wanted more volume, a more continuous sound experience, and a longer sustain. All of these criteria are met with this drum. It also comes with a small port out of which you can remove beads if you choose to. I plan to play it as shipped for the foreseeable future. I can adjust the volume down by ensuring the tilt angle is shallower for a slower flow of the beads. It is taking a little practice but any instrument does. It also looks really good. I'm experimenting with playing it like a regular frame drum but shaking it on some of the beats for special effects. Very cool sound.

What a great instrument!!! Whoever thought of this at Meinl must be a genius! A wave drum and a hand drum - two in one! Instead of buying two separate drums for my music therapy course, I could buy just one, and save some money! The sound is brilliant. I felt it was a little too loud with all the beads, so I removed most of the beads and now it is just perfect! I wonder how it would sound filled with sand, because the sound that the beads make as they fall on the wooden edge of the drum sounds like water droplets, not that it's bad, but I would prefer it if was just pure wave sound. Nevertheless, I love this product! It is so soothing to play this and watch the beads run around. I could do it for hours.

I had a drum kit stolen that I had slowly added high end cymbals and hardware to stolen a while ago and I wasn't the same since. I don't make much so I couldn't afford to purchase a new one. I was looking for videos of how these sound after looking stumbling across these for a gift for a friend of mine, but I ended up buying it myself. There are so many dynamics with this drum. When the metal beads are rolling and toppling over one another as they rush around either the wood rim, the plastic or leather head there is such a jaw dropping spot on sound of a wave cresting then pouring itself upon the sand. But, this isn't just meant to make the sounds of an ocean: it's just something it can do that no other drum can do. There's nothing that says you can't play this like a regular hand drum. Smack it, flick, slide your fingers across it, brush your fingers on it like your strumming a guitar, open palm high five it, roll the beads at the same time while doing this and you can see there are a lot of different sounds that can come from it. Rock your knee up and down as you play it, too, to make hi hat sound and flick the outer regions of either the leather or plastic head for that snare-like pop, use the high-five for the base. I have no idea why these aren't sold as much or as popular as they are. I bet it's because of how loud these can be and testing one of these out in the store while not knowing how to handle the cascading metal beads could be a little embarrassing. This won't keep up your neighbors like a regular kit would, too. I'm not saying get this over a drum kit, but if you're creative and are looking for an alternative (which I honestly enjoy this more) I think this would be a fantastic choice. Maybe start of with 16" or so. Seriously, I love this thing, feel free to message me about this ocean drum. I'm just an excited enthusiast that popped out of thin air.
