Difference of AC CDI & DC CDI
- AC CDI: The CDI Obtains it voltage solely form the current produced by the stator and is one of the most widely used basic in small engines
- AC CDI : on the two plug part of the unit will always have 2 wire generally a black/red=stator power a white/black = engine kill
- AC CDI ：scooter engine will run without a battery or on a dead battery
- DC CDI: The DC CDI module is powered by the battery so an additional DC/AC inverter circuit is needed in the module to step up the voltage from 12VDC to a range 400-600VDC
- DC CDI: Is a lager unit due to the additional circuit and engine running with a DC-CDI set-up have a more precise timing and generally start better when the engine is cold.
- DC CDI: on most scooter is a 4 wire set-up but has been known a 5 wire set-up also, the sure way to know is to check its power source.
Mechanics Note on distinguishing AC fired or DC fired CDI box :
Wire and Plug
- In the GY6 6-plug set-up, you have AC if you have 3-wires going into the 4-plug side and you have 2-wires going into the 2-plug side.
- On the other hand, you have DC if you have the larger CDI box, 3 or 4 wires going into the 4-plug side and only 1 wire going into the 2-plug side.
AC And DC Size
- In general, the DC CDI's tend to be larger in size than the AC ones.
Headlights
- if the headlights turn on without the engine running, (with just the key on), it is a DC system.
- In the AC system the headlight requires the engine to be running. Another indication is, if the engine will only run with a battery it is DC. If it will run without a battery, it is a AC system.

I got this CDI box about a month ago after getting a 'High Performance' one, and having it fail after one use.This little box of joy plugged into the connectors without fuss, and my little 50cc has no problem turning over on the first crank, and still works reliably on the road after a month.If you need a CDI, I would recommend this one!

Tested the product out of the box and it is defective. It would have worked on my ATV. I’m not wasting anymore money returning it. I bought going by most of the reviews. Not a one star rating.
