What I don't like is how the price of the cassettes went up suddenly quite a lot, a few years ago. They say it's because cassettes have become a lot more popular. Then why can't you find a decent portable cassette recorder, including with a tape counter so you can know where you are on a tape, and with a "review" function, where you can go backwards even when you are in Play mode. I used to have a Radio Shack recorder for $60 that did those, and was just a solid piece of equipment, unlike anything available now. It's all cheap junk. I'd pay that or more for a solid piece of equipment.

Mechanically, the cassettes are fine; the tape rolls smoothly. Unfortunately, this is the only feature it has in common with the old Maxell UR-60 tape. More specifically, there are two very serious problems. First, these cassettes cannot be used for music because their high frequency response is very, very poor. Second and more importantly, when you record or play them, the heads get covered in a sort of transparent glue. You need to clean them with alcohol every 20-25 minutes. I have never seen something like this. Probably the chemical structure of the tape’s upper layer has entered a process of decay. If this is the case, these tapes will not last long, which makes them useless even for basic voice recording. Overall, I do not recommend.

Exactly what I wanted for interviewing people on a project. Can't find them at retail stores, only online. My client wanted taped interviews and will keep the tapes after project is completed.

Good-quality cassette tapes, at a reasonable price, are hard to find. I do a lot of oral history, and these Maxwell tapes serve me well, mainly because of the convenience of the now all but "obsolete" cassette recorder. But I have the sound transferred immediately to CDs, in keeping with current electronic trends.Thanks for making the cassettes conveniently available.Don Norton
