Some projects requires sanding inside corners, where a spindle sander is the correct tool. I was not ready to buy a cheaper spindle sander, so I purchased this mandrel (and rubber drums). Prior to this, I used a cheap drum sander kit (Big Horn from Amazon but there are others), but it came with poor quality sanding sleeves and mandrels (was missing 1" one). This mandrel is straight enough and the thread is righty tighty but had no problem using it. The quality is almost identical to my other mandrel from Shopfox - both made in China, but definitely nicer than using 1/2 in threaded rod for this purpose (note that 1/2 threaded rod is undersized so it will not work on 1/2 sanding sleeves). Diablo 1/2 in sleeves went in pretty snugly, however, my other 1/2 in sleeves were too tight - I had to use a cordless drill to rotate the mandrel while pushing the sleeves in - not sure I can get that off now. Main issue using this setup on my drill press is poor dust collection, even with my shopvac hose directed toward the sanding sleeve. While this setup works and did the job, I would really like to have a good spindle sander.

First, the mandrel is not straight or concentric with the mounting shaft. It wobbles very badly even at low speeds. Second, the shaft is not 3/8" as stated in the description. It is oversized and will not fit in a 3/8" collet. Third, the threaded end is also not straight or concentric with the shaft, and is right hand thread instead of left hand, so it will tend to loosen with use. That shouldn't be a problem though because the whole thing is useless.

I bought this mandrel and some sanding cylinders to go with it so I could use my drill press as a small drum sander. I have completed my first project with it and am very happy.
