My son is in the trades and he needed a belt sander for his job, and knowing the Makita brand I was confident that this was the right tool for the job. It's so far been a true work horse for him and it has seen extensive use without any issues. Great tool, and I would recommend to anyone needing a quality belt sander.

35 years cabinet/millwork/carpentry experience. i can finish anything when it comes to woodworking, paint, lacquer, 2 part, poly/varnish, hand rubbed, etc. having the right sander for the right finish is key. this is my arsenal which includes the makita BO6030, BO4900V and 9924DB.makita BO6030, 99% swirl free sander. balanced, quiet, quality and made in UK.makita BO4900V, very impressive! just as good as porter cable (USA model) 505. really like grip on top. primers, sealers and in between coats, i use 320 grit and man talk about smooth!!! MADE IN JAPAN!makita 9924DB i prefer rear handle over top handle. this is my 2nd 9924db, gave my old one to my best friend... still uses it at his cabinet shop. its over 20yr old. MADE IN JAPAN!other models to find, "MUST HAVES!"porter cable 303, 505 and 7336 older models only MADE IN USA, some of the best quality and finishes ever!METABO SXE450 MADE IN GERMANY or old rigid (the orange sanders in pic) sanders made by metabo. not the hitachi metabo new crap. one of the best dual action sanders ever!FESTOOL ETS 125 decent 5" sander for face frames and stiles and rails. i own a lot of festool... meh ok for today's standards, bets china crap, but not as good as old school tools.bottom line BUY QUALITY! yes some of my tools are china crap.

OK, This a very specific review. I own and use both the 9920 and 9924. They are both great sanders, and for some reason us cabinetmakers really prefer the 3x24 for our own reasons. If I had to choose one I'd take the 9920 over this model. The 9924 dust collection bag is it little old school and not in a good way. I kind of like it because the bag on the right side for right handers, but it does not come off by any easy means. The whole sander must be carried to the trash and dumped via the slot in the bag. Also it has a rectangular hook up so vacuum dust collection is not an option. The shoe or plate is also 4" - I suppose so you can run the tracking of the belt left or right depending on the sanding situation. That doesn't bug me, but it is there. This is an older model- a little more metal and less plastic...reminiscent of the old worm drive porter cable sanders...so it has a loyal fan base. But at the end of the day I'd take a good look at the 9920.

Here is a sander that has been around for at least 20 years. I purchased one about that long ago and after running an on/off switch and 2 set of motor brushes out, it finally died. Tried to take it apart and fix it but it was worn all around and motor or controller could not get it (well I cut the electrical rotors on a lathe and I think that messed the timing up). After that, I bought all sorts of sanders, Bosch, Milwaukee, and some cheap stuff too because I was tired of killing them all in no time. None lasted more than a year. Last one took no more than 2 sandings to die. So i finally bought the same old Makita 24X3 belt sander which I always thought was ugly and old fashioned looking. (which it is)Last week end, It put it to hard use to round and level a large butcher block table. I put it through 6 hours straight with a couple cooling periods...metal gets hot if sanding continuously with hard pressure but all belt sander will do that. The Makita takes the abuse like no other sander I know. What a pleasure it was to have a real tool again. As far as I am concerned, this is the best design in terms of weight/power/belt tracking, rugedness, ease to reach sides that is available today even if it's an oldie. Sometimes tools do not get better with time...that's a perfect example...An oldie but a goodie.Word of warning...when you open the box and see the steel/cork plate exetneding way out, you think that's some defect. As if the platten is for a 4 inch belt while rollers are for 3. It allows to track belt right at the edge. Actually it is one of the great feature of that sander, it allows for very wide tracking moves and positioning belt right where you want it...It was designed after trials and errors and plenty of debug and adjustements, just like a good tool should be. My only gripe would be about the fact that the brushes could last a bit longer (even if they probably are close to best). I just wish they had a brushless fully sealed sander out there but i don't think it exists yet or it's way too expensive. So if you have to settle for the least worst sander at a reasonable price, this is it.BtW, do not buy a sander with a little roller in front like some Dewalt do, it tears the belt in no time and is of no use in real world. Belts are expensive, The Makita is gentle on them, that might be my very favorire quality about this sander. Also, forget about adjustable power settings, you always need more power and go full blast unless you are sharpening pencils. This is a sander designed around belt management and when you get engrossed in sanding, all that matters is the belt, not the sander. That tool has achieved the best transparency as far as not existing and letting the belt do the work. It's one ugly but perfect tool, and you learn to love it like you love your Boston Terrier. I ahve to explain that, sorry....I have a pet one kid said about "my God, that is the ugliest dog I have ever seen!" It hurt my feelings but he was probably right. Anyway, the Makita is like my Boston Terrier, one ugly tool you will get addicted to and miss for the rest of your life. Good thing about tools, they have no souls and are not unique.
