I like to record sitcoms at night and watch them during the day but I want to be able to watch other channels while it's reccording on another channel. If it doesn't have a digital tuner, you will NOT be able to watch other channels while recording. I searched all the major departments stores for a couple weeks and could not find a single DVD/VCR recorder combo W/digital tuner. So glad I remembered Amazon. This machine is exactly what I needed. So far it's working great. Here's a few suggests:1. Power your tv on first and press the 'source' button on your TV remote and set it to the source (I have to set mine on HDMI)then press 'timer set' to power on the DVD recorder. If I power my DVD recorder on first then power my TV on, then press source on my tv remote to get it to HDMI, I will not have any sound just the picture and it will record w/o sound. There's probably a way to fix that, I'm still trying to find that solution..2.The ONLY time you power on w/ the 'standby/on' button is after you take it out of the box and hooked everything up- then set the time/date etc. After the initial set up always power on and off w/ the 'timer set' button because it will not record any of the programs you have set. After the initial set-up I NEVER power off or on w/ the 'standby/on' button.3.If I wanted to stop my other DVD recorders from recording if it's one of the programs I preprogramed to record at a certain time and date, all I have to do is press the stop button on the machine itself (not the stop on the DVD remote) but this dvd recorder after you pressed stop, you have to have the tv on and the correct source pressed so you can see the window that popped up asking you if you want to stop recording. You have to scroll to yes and press ok before it will stop.4. So far I'm using only DVD+RW. DVD-RW would not work in any of my DVD recorders (even tho the instrutions said it would),(I have 4), I haven't tried in this machine. It seems all the department stores have stop selling those. They only have DVD+R I have to get mine at office depot or office max.If I remember anything else that could be helpful I'll post it. I ordered on blind fate b/c there were no reviews on this product. So glad I leaped. I trust Amazon and knew if I didn't like it I could return it.I hope this helps anyone struggling to decide on the right one to buy.

Have had this unit for a month or two. Puchased this unit mainly to record television programs on DVD. It works wonderfully for this. Has the built in tuner which is very nice. I use the Verbatim DVD-RW which is one of the brands recommended by manufacturer. Super clear playback picture on my Sony Bravia flat panel TV. Watching commercially made movies on this unit are much clearer than on my old Sony DVD player, probably due to the progressive scan and upscaling feature this has that my older player didn't.I've used the VCR player/recorder feature mainly to watch my older collection of VHS movies. Playback from recordings made on the VCR are not very good. Guess this is due to old (VHS) technology on my newer (LCD) TV. I have used the VCR to transfer my old home movies from VHS to DVD. This is a great feature and worked very well.My only complaints on this Magnavox are:1) Complicated to setup and operate. I'm not a technical minded person and found this unit difficult to use. After using it for several weeks now, I am understanding its functions better. I would not consider this a simply plug and play unit.2) Small buttons on remote, but I've read the newer version (mfg 2009) have larger buttons.Overall I am very satified with this unit and would recommend it for anyone looking for a dual player/recorder at a reasonable price. You'll just need some patience and time when you first try to use it!HERE'S AN UPDATE ON THIS PRODUCT FIVE YEARS AFTER PURCHASE.THIS MAGNAVOX DUAL DECK STILL WORKS GREAT. WE ONLY USE THE DVD RECORDER PORTION OF IT NOW. WE DON'T USE THE DVD PLAYER ANYMORE SINCE PLAYBACK IS BETTER ON OUR BLU RAY UNIT. ALSO HAVEN'T USED THE VHS PLAYER IN A LONG TIME (OBVIOUS REASONS). HOWEVER, BOTH PLAYERS STILL WORK FINE IF WE NEED TO USE THEM DOWN THE ROAD.

Biggest piece of garbage I have bought in a long time!!! I'm just glad it only took four days for it to completely break down!I researched dvrs for about a month online. This one had the best reveiws, for the price. Hooked it up without a problem. Tried to tape something, then realized you cannot tape on one channel & watch another channel. What is the point of taping something then? So moved to another room. The third time I set it up to tape, nothing taped, & it ate the brand new tape. Figured it may just be the tape. So set it for the fourth nite. It was flashing, then it spit out the tape. Put in another tape. Same thing. Another tape, same thing. So I did not even use the dvd part of it. Called magnavox, and they told me to mail it to them to be repaired! Now why would I do that-it is brand new!! I was very disappointed with magnavox's very poor customer service, and will not buy another magnavox product. So I called amazon, and the lady was wonderful. Within a few minutes, she answered my questions, had emailed me the shipping label to return the dvr, and even apologized!
