This book is a must have for anyone into macrame. It builds up from using single knots repeatedly to form cords to using them in multiples to create broader more textured fabrics . It describes how to read the knot symbol shorthand along with a pattern and calculate the amount of cord required depending on the knots being used. From there it becomes easy to create your own patterns. An ideal first book from which to create a sampler and then move in different directions.A few of the samples were tricky to see against the busy fabric backgrounds they were photographed on. But this did not spoil the overall presentation of the book. It is the best macrame book I’ve come across. If only more books were available in this format

I am new to macrame (aside from making a million friendship bracelets in the 80's) so I was worried this book wouldn't be beginner enough for me. It is pretty good, though! Lots of beautiful patterns and information about macrame. However, I really didn't like some of the photography. While the overall look of the book is beautiful and cohesive, the background patterns are WAY too busy. I find it really hard to see some of the examples when they're against a tiny floral print backdrop! It's a shame because the book is so pretty.Still a good book, but be prepared for some eye strain.

I bought this book as a gift for my mother, who recently mentioned macrame. She rarely shops online, so resorted to searching for books at retail stores - with no luck. Given that she used to craft macrame years ago, I figured finding a refresher guide with a balance of beginner through advanced techniques would work best. I read the reviews and made the decision to purchase this and one other book to start her off in crafting.Note: I do not know much about macrame, but I do know sewing and various crafts. Upon arrival, I browsed through the pages and was absolutely pleased with the amount of information that this book offers. There are many knots and techniques that will benefit someone returning to this craft. I highly recommend this, especially since I, who knows very little about macrame, was able to understand and apply these techniques to my own crafting.Fast shipping and the product was perfectly sound! The book looks brand new as if never opened. Thank you!!!

Although this book includes a lot of nice images and ideas for possible macrame styles and patterns, I have found the instructions for making the wall hanging patterns very unclear and lacking in adequate detail. I'm a beginner macrame artist, so perhaps someone with more experience wouldn't have any difficulties. Some of the simpler braiding/jewelry-type project instructions in earlier chapters seem much simpler and more comprehensible, but so far I've only tried a couple of the wall hanging patterns and it took/is taking excessive time with some trial and error to figure out how to do the knots and 'flow' across the various ropes correctly. I personally found the diagrams to be quite confusing with just not enough verbal instructions/explanation, which can make what should be a fun project unnecessarily frustrating and time-consuming. However, I do like the finished result of my first wall hanging, even though it doesn't really look that much like any of the suggested patterns in the book. I am still looking forward to trying some other patterns from this book because with enough time, I think I will be able to figure out most of the knot types and knotting patterns for the wall hangings and I also want to try the round rug pattern. Good luck to everyone trying to learn how to do these for the first time!

i love this book. i'm currently working on 3 projects at the same time using various sizes of cords--havent' finished one yet but i had to write this review because i think this book is just beautiful. i didn't see that it was japanese when i ordered it which to me is a HUGE bonus because i adore craft books from japan. they're some of the most beautiful books i own and this one is just like it. i was thrilled when it came in. there's absolutely no translation issues either which is another huge plus. it was created by some kind of huge nation-wise macrame society of japan so seems to be an authentic authority. i knew absolutely nothing about macrame but this book seems to cover it all--both small-scale jewelry pieces (sennets) and then what i was interested in--larger-scale "panels" for wall-hangings or bags, etc. lots of patterns, tons of different knots, clear directions and its beautiful to boot. so often you get a craft book and you have to imagine all the examples but with better or more interesting aesthetics? not here. the people who did this have excellent taste (i think) so its inspiring, too. i really, really love it.
