This Luna Bean Alginate Molding Powder works really well for capturing detailed hand molds, and the final result comes out impressively realistic. The material is non-toxic and skin-safe, which is great for couples, families, or even pet paw prints. Just be prepared to work quickly, because once mixed, it starts setting fast. If you’re not familiar with the process, I’d recommend doing a test batch first to get the timing right. We screwed up our first time. Overall, it’s a high-quality molding powder that delivers amazing detail when used correctly.

The product did a good job for making the molds, but the instructions could have used a bit more detail. It didn't give a good indication of how long it would take for the color to change indicating it was ready to start molding, and didn't give an indication of how long the product would take to set. You'll be mixing for a few minutes before it's ready for casting, but it will be pretty obvious when it's ready. I've found the results are best if you've got a paint mixing attachment for a drill rather than attempting to mix by hand. I gave it approximately 10 minutes to set which seemed to work well, and did the final casting shortly after removing the item to be cast.
Really nice

Easy to use for making molds of anything. I heard this is better than the "clone a willy" molding, did try it that way and husband said it was painless.

Like many on here, we bought this as a replacement for the mold material in the clone-a-willy kit (that stuff is awful). This material works much better, BUT BE AWARE that the water temperature is critical. Using cold water greatly increases the setting time, making it unusable. Using hot water makes it set so fast, you better have "everything" ready to go. Room temperature water was the right balance for us. Also, don't stress over the water:powder proportions. Mix it to where the mixture is smooth enough to flow. Happy molding!

This is an amazing product, the instructions say to wait until it starts to turn from pink to gray, and next time I would allow it to turn more gray. My mom and son held their hands in there for about 10 minutes and I’m so grateful that they were so patient. We used two bags just to make sure that I could get their arms in there as well. Make sure to have whoever you are molding togethers arms touching I said that the mold will not break. For my cast, I used two parts resin to one part number one plaster. But I don’t recommend it unless you are experienced since the allergen, it releases moisture as it dries. I had to polish the hands with all of the different tools. I had to make them look as clean as they do in the photos. The last photo is a cast I made from a mold of the original cast.

The Amazon listing indicates that this is 3 lb of alginate. The photos in the ad indicate that the packages are " Over1 pound 500 g". Several places in the ad it indicates that the item is three pounds of alginate there is one place in the ad where it indicates that it is for two lbs that the packages are 456grams. Packages received are marked 450 grams. If you are counting on the extra 150grams it's not here.

I just used this to cast my hand and it worked fantastically.I mixed a full 1 pound bag into 7 cups of 80 degree water. It turned pink right away. I stirred it quickly and almost didn't have time to get it into the casting box. Then I plunged my hand into it. After a few minutes it turned gray/white and I was able to wiggle my hand free. After 20 minutes I filled it with plaster of Paris. I let that sit for two hours and then removed the mold. It came off easily. The plaster of Paris cast has great detail. I will use this stuff again. Some hints:1. I made a form to hold the casting by taping together cardboard to make a tube. Then I put a plastic supermarket bag inside of that. The alginate is pretty thick so it was not a problem.2. I should have been more careful to position my hand in the middle of the form; the alginate was thin on one side. Still, it held up to the plaster casting.3. One pound was just enough to do my big hand up to just beyond my wrist.4. I oiled my hand and arm with vegetable oil. I think that was unnecessary. I don't think the alginate would have pulled out my hair.5. Next time I will mix it in an even bigger bowl. Really big bowl. I might do it with a bit more water; the alginate will take longer to set.6. When adding the plaster I banged the mold several times to release air bubbles, but there were still some big ones. I should have put in just a bit of plaster to begin with and rotated the mold to get air out of the ends of my fingers.7. Demolding was done with a small paring knife. At one point I broke the casting because I was pulling too hard. I should have taken my time. In the end I used some dental picks to get out the last little bits of alginate.Overall this is great stuff and very easy to use. I highly recommend it.
