About this item

  • Tests network cable pairs for Power over Ethernet (PoE)
  • Identifies the power type as IEEE 802.3af, Cisco Inline or Non-Standard
  • Simulates a network device for making power measurements under actual loaded conditions
  • Displays voltage, polarity and mid-span or phantom configuration for powered wire pairs
  • Detects 10/100/1000 BaseTX Link speed and duplex mode

The LanMaster 35 is a new handheld tester used for installing and maintaining Local Area Networks (LAN) using Power over Ethernet (PoE). The LanMaster 35 Power and Link Tester conducts power tests with actual loads to ensure that when a powered device such as a VoIP phone, wireless access point or security camera is connected to the network it will operate properly. The LanMaster 35 identifies whether power is IEEE 802.3af compliant or a legacy configuration, such as Cisco Inline power, for correctly connecting powered devices. The unit measures Loop Resistance to quickly identify damaged cables and bad punchdowns that cause intermittent problems or equipment malfunction. The LanMaster 35 provides Link speed and duplex mode testing capabilities for verifying connectivity of a powered or unpowered 10/100/1000BaseTX Link. The unit measures cable length and can be connected to a wall outlet to identify a connected port on a switch or hub. The LanMaster 35 is an essential tool for installing and maintaining networks that utilize the latest PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology.

The right tool saves a lot of guessing when time counts. With this baby, you can be pretty sure layer one is good or needs to be fixed. It's a standard toner with four different tone patterns. That allows me to use my Fox 2 toner and the LanMaster 35 toner with different tone patterns to find cables with fewer trips to the jacks. Any toner probe will pick up the LanMaster analog tone. The carry case has room for the Psiber CT-15 probe, but it is an option purchased separately. Cool, but not that special. The link setting will identify live network jacks and display their speed. Once you have a link, the Port ID will blink the switch port activity LED to quickly find where the cable is plugged into. Nice time saver if someone did not do a good job labeling jacks and cables. BTW, Cisco switches only respond to the slow rate. My cheap Linksys switch does not care whether the rate is fast, medium or slow. If no link is found, you can run a pair test with the built in TDR. It returns each pair length (only 1-2, 3-6) and whether the pairs are open or shorted. The PoE test lets you know if power is available, displays voltage, resistance and wattage of the connection. Higher resistance would indicate a bad connection or punch down somewhere in the line. High resistance or intermittent PoE would be really irritating to troubleshoot without this type of tester.Only gripe is the LanMaster 35 unit only has a RJ45 plug for connections. If you do phone work, a regular four wire toner is needed for RJ11 and punch downs - like the Fox 2 toner. Of course at this price, you don't get full speed tests of the cables. Continuity, length and resistance are pretty good indicators of bad cable without pulling out the $5,000 certification tester.Nice, handy and cooler than the other tech's stuff.
