Just to be clear, and this is my mistake, this is NOT for replacing coil springs only for compressing them. This tool felt very safe to use and compresses Macpherson springs well, however the bolt is not long enough to take a new spring and install it on your coilover if the makes sense. I think the purpose behind the tool is to compress an already compressed spring and immediately install it on a new strut, do not attempt to compress a full decompressed spring with this it will not work. I wanted to reuse my existing springs on my new struts but needed to do some rust removal and painting, I removed the tool from those springs and... couldn't get the tool to compress them enough to reinstall them on new struts... It would have worked had I not needed to fully decompress my existing springs and remove the tool for painting and sanding. That being said, if you just need to service your struts or you intend on immediately taking an already compressed spring and putting it on a new strut this tool is actually very solid. Again, this is probably my fault for not reading the description thoroughly as the tool itself states this, but do not buy these if you intentions are to fully compress a spring or build a macpherson suspension from scratch. Otherwise, very safe and solid tool.

I believe the first one I received had been previously returned as it was missing several parts. However, the second one had all components and worked great.Removing coil springs from a strut is a bit sketchy, but after using this tool I can definitely say this is the way to go. The clamps that bolt onto the spring prevent it from slipping out during compression; which was my main concern. These clamps are well built, and made me feel much more comfortable about the entire process. This tool worked very well on an E90 BMW, but if you are looking to remove strut springs from anything larger than a small sedan you may want to opt for a larger model.

Does not do well with "replacing" coils. It even says "not intended for replacing coils". This tool is really for replacing struts using the same coils, because the tool is pretty short. However, I ended up buying two pairs because I like how safe the design is.I was just barely was able to compress VW passat coil springs with two of these to replace them. it took me three for my Volvo s60. So...if you drive a truck or something and you're trying to replace your coil springs, these probably won't work or you'll need to use at least two pairs. You can probably get away with changing struts if you plan on keeping your old coils. As far as the actual usage of the tool, they work very well and feel very safe. Very effective strut replacement tool. Would be nice if they came with extra nuts

I look at the cheaper ones (about half the price) and the ones you rent from the auto parts store. Perhaps for a small car those would be ok but evne then they look cheap and unsafe. The danger from a compressed spring is quite high so since i like my hands i figured for the extra 30 buck i would try this one. It is make in the USA...it has been around for years...is very solid...it bolts to the spring so no chance of slipping. I used it several times working on mustang racing struts...Keep it well greased (dont skimp...lube it up) and it will last a lifetime. Also, just to give you an idea on the qality...the cheap ones dont recommend using an impact tool with it. This one does. so the time savings alone is worth it.

I bought because this tool looked to be the safest option with the u-bolts. Solidly built, probably works well. Unfortunately, the u-bolts did not fit on to the springs on my 2017 F150. The diameter of the spring was too big. Thankfully, returning it was easy.

I have been using a set of these occasionally in my home workshop for about two decades now. You can buy replacement nuts for them if the nut gets lost or worn, but after many uses I decided to buy a new set as mine was getting noticeably worn.I like the very simple and secure way the u-bolts attach to the spring being compressed. Nothing can slip and get away from you, unlike some of the more common "hook-type" units on the market.Do lubricate the heavy lead screws and nuts with gear oil or chassis grease before each use as this will both make it easier to use and prolong the life of the big screw and nut. These are cut with an uncommon "acme thread" which is used for very heavy duty applications and is unlike the hardware you normally see. Finally, it is great to buy a tool twice 20 years apart and find that the new one appears to be exactly the same as the old one except for wear. Usually you see where compromises have been made to reduce production costs, but not with these.

Unless you already have a strut off of the vehicle, these are useless. They haven't fit on any car I have tried, including rear springs on a 73 LTD. If you want to use them to swap old springs on to new struts, they might be what you want. If you're thinking they will be a safer spring compressor for any kind of front end work, look elsewhere.

It did the job perfectly and I strongly recommend this tool. LUBE the threads A LOT before use. It is very well made. The design makes it MUCH safer than the spring compressors with just pins. I would NOT get anywhere near those, because the springs are extremely dangerous. Honestly, though, you may want to get the entire strut/spring assembly(quick strut) if a quality one is available, especially on a very high mileage vehicle, because all the other components are bound to be pretty worn, and you won't find out until you take the old strut apart, that, for example, the bearing at the top is completely chewed up. At least be ready for the possibility.
