Where to start? If you have one or two orchids to repot and you’re not especially interested perlite being a key component of your mixture, this might be for you. If you want your mixture to be mostly moss about the color and texture of craft moss (and there’s really no way to tell if it’s been chemically treated or colored as far as I can tell), this might be for you. If you have only enough space on your potting cart or plant work area for something roughly the size of a small bag of potato chips, this might be for you. But if you’re serious about finding a healthy aerated orchid mix that’s not overpriced, maybe this isn’t the one for you. It isn’t the one for me, for sure. I will risk using some of the mixture on top of my soil to prevent fungus gnats from having a party, but that’s about it.

I have never re-potted an orchid before, but I am very experienced at killing them. I ordered this quart-sized package of orchid potting mix to refresh my 3-year-old orchid that has somehow manage to survive me. This is an interesting little kit. I say "kit" because it is a complete mixture - it has perlite, coco peat, and bark at the bottom of the package and moss on the top (maybe all orchid potting mixes come this way, like I said, I am not experienced). It also has complete instructions on the packaging, plus a little tip - which, for me, is so helpful. The quart-size package is a very small package - probably enough to re-pot one small orchid. Wish me luck.

Do not buy this “orchid” potting mix. From my estimation it’s about 40% regular potting soil, 30% clumps of moss, and 30% bark chunks. The bag is smaller than you’d think, and it does not come as a pre-mixed medium: the potting mix is on bottom, followed by a layer of bark, and the top third of the bag is big clumps of moss. It was a pain to try to pull apart the moss clumps and the moss is so thick that it’s pretty much impossible to try to blend it by hand with the other ingredients, especially the potting mix, which instantly settles below the moss when you try to blend them. This mix might work well for an epiphyte along the lines of a jungle cactus or Hoya, but it’s way too fine for an orchid. There was literally the tiniest pieces of dust in the potting mix- this will cause root or crown rot. It will also easily pour out of the sides of an orchid pot.
