The Vista with blue ink, with its transparent barrel and cap, and brilliant inner chrome workings, is clearly a great pen. Its modern, hi-tech look and light weight makes it popular with note-takers. An excellent choice for a student you know, or see for yourself.

I’m new to using fountain pens and been seeing this brand recommended frequently, so decided to give it a try and so glad I did. Great pen and easy to fill. I like the way it fits in my hand. Always writes from the jump. No skipping.

Whether starting out with the fountain pen type or wanting more choice for how one writes in terms of writing tips, LAMY proves to be quite functional. This clear design variant of their Safari model may not have the same attraction as its black-bodied original, but it writes just the same and teaches you how to properly grip, write with a fountain pen. This purchase had the extra fine tip installed on it with a blue ink cartridge, and after enough testing, I don't think I need the regular Fine tip to know that Extra Fine works for me. I would say the proper grip on the pen body is comfortable enough to eventually disappear into your hand after enough time to where you no longer consciously think about it. Official ink cartridges by the company have only a handful of choices when it comes to color variety, but there is a reusable reservoir cartridge that works with the pen and allows you to use whatever make and color inks you would like with it. I have not gotten to that point yet, but so far, I see the writing experience as better than I could have ever imagined. With a generally low price of entry, I believe the LAMY Safari is the best first step for beginners in absence of any PILOT Varsity pens to test to see if these will suit their style, or the best second step for anyone who wants the option to have a variety of tips for their writing or drawing.

I have several Lamy fountain pens, the 2000, AL-Star, Safari and the latest...the Vista. Before I bought the Vista I checked out some reviews and there were many on YouTube.I bought it on price and for the nib that I wanted. Also, some of the parts are inter-changeable. Although in the various reviews there is no difference between the Vista and the Safari, however, there is one, i.e. the logo is printed instead of being edged. Therefore, over time of use, the paint would come off. This is the only downside. Apart from that, the design and built quality is excellent as of Lamy and German engineering.I have no regret in my purchase despite my complaint about the logo issue. It's good value and it is a very good EDC fountain pen. I will continue to buy Lamy pens and my next would be a Safari.

Excellent pen... until now, I’d used only Pilot V-pens(Varsity), a Jinhao X750, and a Cross Stratford. I ordered the EF anticipating a thick German line, but this is a very fine line... I’d probably prefer a Fine or Medium, but I got what I ordered, so that’s on me. Very smooth writing... I expected an extra fine to be scratchy, but it’s been great. I ordered a Lamy ink converter, which is due in a week or so... which has me a little worried, because I’m over half done the included cartidge.Update- converter arrived on time and the cartridge still lasted another week... works well and looks great with the Z28? Black knob cartridge converter.

I used to be a dispatcher, and that was where I got a taste for - and in most cases a disdain for - Fountain Pens. When they work well, they work VERY well, but when they don't, it's a disaster - especially when you rely on them for your job, and a job where you write - a LOT. Bent nibs, scratchy, fast wear, thick, blotchy lines - even nibs so sharp they cut the paper. And this even in some 3 (and 4) digit fountain pens. I had given up...Until I was turned on to Lamy. Surprisingly, by an abrasive internet troll... who ended up also being a fountain pen addict. He was commenting (elsewhere on the net - I couldn't type 3 words without our conversations becoming thermonuclear) about these inexpensive pens from Germany that kicked butt on Parker, Plucked Pelikan, climbed all over MountBlanc, and best of all, they were "Cheap"!OK, I have to admit... I was thinking "What does this idiot, er, guy know?", but after doing a bit of research (and finding similar people raving over these pens) and realizing I could gamble $25 bucks on a fountain pen - I bought my first Vista. It was a fine point (which is kind of a misnomer - Lamy Fine Points are about a Medium, the Xtra Fines are more like a traditional fine point) and as soon as I charged it with the (complimentary) cartridge and got it running...WOW!I got another (all my Lamys are Xtra Fines, BTW, except for that first Vista) and a couple converters (they're # Z-24 if you're curious - same that fits the Al-Stars) and a few bottles of Noodlers (I mix my own secret blend - call me funny, but it always works and it's *my* color) and II have NEVER looked back. The Nibs are smooth, predictable, decidedly NOT scratchy, and well built. The pen is comfortable, and the nib holder has an intuitive design that fits and works my hand - you can tell the position by feel EVERY time. They're not a Mountblanc or a Waterman, but strangely enough I have never had one of these "cheap German Pens" give me 1/20th of the issues I've had with it's higher priced cousins.They... just... flat... WORK! And if you want to learn how to use a fountain pen you can afford to learn on these - because they won't break your bank... and the nibs are tough enough where you won't break them either (short of deliberate abuse, bending, etc.).Give them a try. For $30, how can you go wrong? In fact - you may wonder why the "big boys" don't write this good for10x (or more) the $$.

I absolutely love this pen! This is my first fountain pen. An ink cartridge (blue ink) came with the pen and I received the converter free with purchase. I was a bit baffled at first because it took a while for the ink to flow from the cartridge to the nib. Does anyone have any suggestions to speed up the process next time or do you just have to be patient and wait for the ink to flow? I ended up shaking the pen for about 5 min and tapping it on scratch paper. Why do I like the pen so much?+ The barrel is large enough in diameter that it's very comfortable to write with.+ You don't need to press hard for the ink to appear on paper - it relieves muscle strain in my hands and wrist.+ The Extra Fine nib is perfect for everyday uses and I will often use the pen with the nib "upside down" when I am drawing fine lines.+ The clear design of the pen is modern looking and aesthetically pleasing to me. On the practical side, it shows you how much ink you have left.Complaints?- You can run out of ink very quickly if you're a big writer like me. I take notes for class and like to doodle when I'm on the phone. After a week of heavy use, I'm already at three-quarters of the ink cartridge. Think about investing in some bottled ink.- The nib tends to 'creep', that is to leak or spread ink through the slit of the nib. This fountain pen is under $30 so I expected a poorer quality nib but it doesn't effect ink flow when I write and the appearance doesn't bother me. I just wipe the edges gently with a damp tissue. If it will bother you, then purchase a black/graphite color nib from LAMY for $10.50 on jetpens dot com.Update (11/24/2010)I would recommend Noodler's Ink to go along with the LAMY Safari + converter. Some suggestions:+ Noodler's Ink Dark Matter: A beautifully smooth black ink.+ Noodler's Ink Burgandy: A dark, wine red color that still looks professional (but sassy too).AdviceYou don't need to purchase a converter to use bottled ink. When your original cartridge runs out, rinse it with soapy water, go to the local drugstore and buy a syringe for under 50 cents (the thickest gauge they carry). Try to blunt the needle or just be careful while handling. Now you can use the syringe to such up the ink and transfer to the used ink cartridge! You're all set for more writing/ drawing/ doodling :)Also, this Christmas I will be gifting these pens for sure. With all the technology that people carry nowadays, it's nice to give a classic, timeless gift that can be used for generations to come.
