Wire Rope Slings

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SLING & HITCH

Selecting the right hitch and sling size is vital for safe lifting. The correct combination ensures stability, even weight distribution, and minimizes the risk of accidents. Using an improper hitch or undersized sling can lead to overloading and failure, while an oversized sling can strain equipment and decrease efficiency. Therefore, careful consideration of load characteristics is key to safe and effective lifting operations.

Vertical Hitch

A sling can be used in a vertical hitch, or straight hitch, by attaching one eye to the load and the opposite end to the lifting mechanism. This is the simplest hitch and will use the full lifting capacity of the sling.

Choker Hitch

A sling can be used in a choker hitch by wrapping the sling around the load, passing one eye through opposite eye, and attaching the eye to the lifting mechanism. Due to stress at the choke point, this hitch reduces the sling's lifting capacity which is dependent on the angle of the choke.

Basket Hitch

A sling can be used in a basket hitch by passing it under the load and attaching both eyes to the lifting mechanism. This hitch has twice the lifting capacity of a single vertical hitch, because it distributes the load equally between the two ends of the sling.

I had one of the wires attached to my sun sail break during a storm and almost lost a very expensive window. Bought this to ensure it doesn’t happen again. This is overkill for a sun sail, but there is no way this thing will break. You could tow a truck with it. The only issue I can see is that it might rust since it’s not stainless steel.

Using this as a choker for winching large limbs and trunk sections. I use a rope as a winch line in hopes of never tipping my bucket truck by overloading the boom, rope wrapped around bark tends to fray, putting a new rope on and hoping this will eliminate chafing. It's heavy duty for sure, haven't had a chance to use it yet so will update after a few trees but initially I'm pleased, it's well done, no defects, as long as the ratings are correct I would assume this will last me several years and will prolong the useable life of some very expensive rope as well as streamlining the unhooking process for my ground guys (instead of three wraps it'll just be unhooking and pulling choker free) and make the entire process much safer for them.Update: used several times now and no complaints, it bites into trunk enough to not let it slip, though if you use it repeatedly on same diameter material it develops a crimp in the wire, not a deal breaker or even unexpected but just pointing out that you should try to avoid or mix up sizes. Not the end all I was looking for but has definitely reduced the fraying my winch line has so overall cost effective and safe.

When I unboxed the cable my very first thought was "did they send me a used cable?" -- because it was so dirty and greasy. My hands had black marks from all the dirt and grease.I needed the cable for a very unique indoor application, so got out a hot bucket of water, dawn and a scrub brush and the cable cleaned right up.Very happy with the final result.
