The Rising Popularity of Frogs as Pets

One of the most sought-after amphibians that people love to keep as pets is frogs. Pet owners have various species to choose including bullfrogs, tree frogs, horned frogs, dart frogs, and narrow-mouth frogs. They also possess a variety of colors and patterns which pet lovers are very fond of.

The Secrets to Successful Frog Care However, along with the decision to keep frogs as pets comes the responsibility to provide the best care to thrive in their new habitat. Here are some tips so beginners and seasoned frog enthusiasts can give the proper care that frogs need:

Enclosure:

Keep your frog pets inside a 10 or 20 – gallon enclosure. The size depends on how many are going to co-habit, their sizes, and their behavior.

Choose the correct lid to cover it, and it should keep their surroundings moist. For instance, tree frogs should have tall enclosures.

On the other hand, ground dwellers like bullfrogs and Pacman frogs require horizontal space. Their new home should also mimic their native habitat so that they can live happily and comfortably.

Placing a set of Mahogany Leaves by JOR in the last layer of the enclosure will help in keeping their habitat moist but not wet. Functioning as a thermal cover, this set of dried leaves also helps your pets deal with extreme climatic conditions. Each pack has 50 leaves with each leaf measuring about 2 to 3 inches. For big enclosures, you should put more than one pack.

Diet:

Frogs’ diet comprises mainly of insects, including roaches, insect larvae (mealworms, waxworms), grasshoppers, and flightless fruit flies. The pack of Mahogany leaf litter that you place in the enclosure, once broken down, can serve as food for your frog’s favorite meals. Caring for frogs is not complicated as they appear to be. Doing the basic things right as you prepare a livable enclosure will help you go far.

I’ve tried different brands of leaf litter and this is by far my favorite. It makes the tank look nice and clean and isn’t bulky or hard to place.

I've only tried 2 different brands and leaf types and these are always good quality, good size, and hold up very well! I'll definitely keep buying these!

I bought a couple of bags in December 2023 and I have found no issues. I'm buying another bag. I'm not sure why there are no reviews yet for these. Maybe no reviews makes a customer not buy these, but I took a chance. Follow the directions in the information about oven use.

I tried Josh's Frogs leaf litter because everyone obsessed over it but I wasn't impressed. Not only was it pricey but every bag I got had 90% of the leaves molded. So I decided to try this one despite it not having a bunch of reviews and I'm glad I took the risk! These leaves are perfect for my frog's 18x18x24 30 gal terrarium. Two bags cover the bulk of the bottom and small gaps get covered by decor like the water bowl or large rocks, etc. I've bought this multiple times and the leaves are intact and maybe one or two will have mold. They are about 2-3 inches long and they really fluff up after you boil them. For extra safety I always boil leaf litter for 15 minutes. I leave them in my enclosure for a month before refreshing them as my tank is not bioactive. They handle humidity well and keep the substrate off of my White's Tree Frogs.
