This is like my 5th one and I love the oak color. Very easy to do a great job and will save you a couple of hundred dollars by not going to the taxidermist.

What I liked about this kit is that you have plenty of flexibility to customize it.Both pieces of wood are solid oak.The gap in the backside into which your tail base will fit, is wide enough to accommodate a thicker tail (I left three layers of tail feathers in place. I was in a hurry when I mounted the tail for drying so i left quite a lot of meat on the feather base. But no problem - I could still mount the tail where it needed to be).Take a look at the instructional video that the HS Specialties posted on youtube. It will make everything easy to understand and give you some inspiration for doing things the way you want them.I filled the ends of the two feet/claws with epoxy and screwed a small gold hook into them. I used the two ring eyes provided in the kit and screwed these into the pilot holes along the bottom of the top face plate of wood. This will let me remove a foot if someone wants to see it up close. But you can use the provided leather strapping - there are slots in the backside of the face plate that the leather can be glued into to form a loop. The image of the turkey on the face plate looks fine. It's not something I really was looking for but it's not offensive. If I had to get critical, the bottom piece of wood had some underlying staining. Nothing terrible, but not a pure oak grainy finish. Also along the top piece of wood there was some shiny edges where it rubbed inside the package during shipping and handling from the manufacture and ultimately to me. It's not worth returning or squabbling about. I didn't have any problems with the hardware or screw breaking. Keep in mind you are placing the screws into dense oak so if it feels too tight, drill the holes out a little more.If you have a little bit of DIY in you, you'll have a good time creating your work of art.

Very nice kit, looks very professional if you take the time to do it right. I'd suggest replacing the screws with new hardware as the screws provided are cheap and can shear off easily (it happened to me). Also, I used a few cardboard shims to hold the fan in the bracket rather than screwing it in place. This was much faster and allowed me to adjust the fan so it was just right once mounted on the wall. I didn't bother with the extra beards as I preferred a cleaner look, but that's just my choice.

I think that the laser burned Turkey was great. It was exactly perfect. I am a woodworker with years of experience in construction and finish of wood products. That being said I am really picky about the top coat. I took the plaque and soft sanded it and used Min Wax poly over the top. Bad Move, whatever the Chinese used on it was not happy (as in chemical reaction). I sanded all finish off and used their laser out line as well as photos to reburn fanned turkey. Here I have hours of experience at woodburning (pyrography) and specialized burning pens to redo what was perfect to start with. Plaque is oak and oak isn't the best wood to burn by hand because of the openness of the grain. A laser never misses. Laser detail is very "crisp". Most people will be happy with it is as is. I had to strip and refinish. That was on me, I was doing 3 mounts and I used 2 of these and one made by a different manufacturer. The mount worked best on the Hunter Specialty plaques. I poly coated the whole legs and used in place of where the 2 outside beards and spurs shown. I put brass screw eyes and hung other beards. You can be flexible and add more beards as you want. I used 3/4" copper pipe caps that were polished on a wheel with jewelers rouge. Hot melt glue and sreweyes facilitate hanging. Let it be known here that the plaque comes with the leather lace to mount what you see in picture there are NO BEADS. You will have to get them on your own. I would recommend without reservation what you get right out of the box. Refinish is at your own peril.

This was my first turkey mount, so I was extremely picky when and cautious before purchasing. Overall I am satisfied with the product but there were some things that I had to work around:The Good:This is solid wood, not some press board with a wood grain veneer. It feels strong and sturdyAll of the screw holes were pre-drilled. For a pro or more experienced mounter, that may not be a big deal but for me, I liked knowing I was lining everything up correctly. The turkey engraving on the front is very nice and well done. It really stands out.The Not So Good:The area for the beard was way to skinny. I had to smash by beard somewhat flat to get it to fit into the narrow spot left for it.The two screws supplied for the fan mount were way too long and would have gone through the front plate. The screw supplied for the fan snapped in half as soon as any tension was applied. I know this can happen but it took awhile to get out.Mounting the spikes as shown is not nearly as simple as they made it seem. At this point I have skipped this and will come back to it later.I have yet to have the plate engraved so I do not know how well this will stick to the base. It would have been nice had they included two small screws to put the brass plate into but I know that is nitpicking.Overall, with some minor adjustments the item looks very nice and displays my trophy well.
