I've used a lot of straight mutes in my trombones over the MANY years, but I always come back to these stonelined H&B mutes because they sound the best!

This is the classic straight mute. It works fine, but the material is a little thin and gets deformed easily, especially at the open end that you stick into the bell. Something in solid aluminum might be a little better.

Pretty much of the standard for average mutes. Sound is good, looks well built. Dropped several times without a problem except for the glaring looks from the rest of the section.

Is a fine trombone mute however struggles in the low-end. If you can afford it I would recommend getting a higher quality mute but if you can't this will work fine.

These are a must have for the trombone player it helps to allow students to learn to play using breath control and push needed air flow without bothering family members and neighbors. It also helps to obtain spacific unique muted sounds for pieces.

Doesn't reduce volume as much as other mutes I've tried, but is the only mute that doesn't distort the tone of specific notes. Gets four stars instead of five for how ridiculously large it is and for the average build quality.

People who start on these mutes in grade school bash them but they are good mutes. It has a noticeably different sound than any of my three metal straights and is worth having. I have yet to need it on a gig (I bought it expressly because I thought I would need it for a jazz recording session - they're still the standard in some big bands, with the H&B cup being the standard in most), but even just for personal use it's a worthy addition to my arsenal. Plus like most H&B mutes it's very cheap for a mute.

Our son graduated, and he's still playing. The school had mutes to loan, but now he needs his own. This was the same model he used at school, and most of the pros in the Big Band use the same mute. Works great, sounds nice.
