Exactly what I needed

My HP2420dn started having network interface problems. In an effort to fix them, I updated the firmware to the latest version (20120113 08.120.4) from HP. After the update, the internal NIC stopped working altogether. In fact, unless I disabled the interface, the printer would halt before the initialization completed.I later discovered that my very old 3Com switch was failing. I do not know whether the switch caused the NIC to fail or the NIC caused the switch to fail. In any case, I replaced the switch and installed this EIO JetDirect NIC (635N) in the printer. I thought this would solve my problems. It did not -- I still had various 49.xxxx errors. While investigating the problem, I noticed a couple of odd things. First, the Windows driver for the printer showed that the printer had 128 MB of RAM (it only had 64 MB) and the available choices were from 128 MB to 512 MB. Second, as part of the firmware update, the RAM Disk option in the printer had been set to AUTO (I had always had it disabled). I suspected that my "memory problems" were being caused by too little memory for the requirements of the new firmware and EIO NIC. I disabled the RAM Disk and the problems improved but did not disappear. To address the potential memory issue, I replaced the 64 MB DIMM with a new 512 MB DIMM. Now, the printer seems to be working correctly. However, the internal NIC still causes the printer to halt before the initialization is complete so I leave it disabled. For those who might be having a similar problem:I removed the old DIMM from the printer so it is possible that, although it always passed the initialization self-test, the DIMM was bad and it caused the problems.Because the Windows driver thought the printer had more memory than it did, Windows might have been writing too much data to the printer overwriting memory used by the firmware. It is possible that the firmware upgrade failed to install correctly because of limited memory and that failure is causing the internal NIC problems.I installed the latest HP print drivers so the standard Microsoft Windows 7 drivers might have been contributing to the problems. In any case, the printer has been working without errors for several weeks and I am very pleased with the new NIC.

It is what we hoped would fit in with our Printer. It saved us from having to buy a new printer!

This device works as specified. Which is great new for any product. Would certainly purchase again. Now I need to add this last part to satisfy the required number of words.

My HP DesignJet had been getting very flaky and was printing intermittently. The HP tech suggested it was time to upgrade the network card so we bought this 635N card and all our troubles went away. It arrived on time, in perfect condition, and it worked immediately.

I wish they had told us the printer did not have this option. No problems with this device just the original printer.

Our new HP Designjet 111 is an essential tool for our business. When originally installed, we'd kept it close to one of our print servers and used an available USB port. With this new Directjet plug-in card, we can move the DesignJet anywhere in the office we need. Also, the printing is faster and the client machines can see the printer status more easily.

You know things have moved on in the world when your printer does GigE and IPv6! (mine is using both) Card worked out of the box, though I don't run DHCP for IPv6 so had to hand-tweak that. Only downside of this card is it's a bit pricey - you can buy networked laser printers for less these days.
