This guide is self-squaring; just mounting the plane blade in the jig squares it up guaranteeing an straight blade. It comes with a guide for proper alignment of the blade's cutting angle. This is my second honing guide. I have been using a well know competitor for 20 years that started showing some wear and caused a misalignment of the blade. After using this guide for about a dozen times, the bias introduced by the original guide's wear has been eliminated. I had one problem with the guide: I read the instructions, watched several videos on its setup and use. I set it up as instructed. And keep in mind I an an experienced honing guide user - I use one a lot as I am a bamboo fly rod maker and have to constantly sharpen my plane blade. But the first time I used the guide to sharpen a plane blade, one of the rollers locked up and before I realized it a flat spot was honed into the roller. I took the rollers off, cleaned and lubed them and put them back on the guide. Everything is working OK now and the flat spot is beginning to "hone" itself out. I would recommend a little lube on the rollers before mounting. But overall a really good guide. I would buy it again.

I got a chance to use this sharpening set more thoroughly after pairing it up with the SUWAJUME 7-piece diamond sharpener / honing plate set, also from Amazon. I am quite pleased with the sharpening guide set (and the plates). Even the instructions with the sharpening guide set are very good: clearly worded, large and easy to read font size, and good graphics. The components are well made and clearly marked. This kit, along with the sharpening plates, allows me to rather quickly sharpen tools. The sharpening guide is the key because it maintains a consistent angle throughout the sharpening process. The set includes two very useful accessories in addition to the guide itself: an easy to use sharpening angle gauge and a heavy, metal sharpening angle fixture. This fixture provides an easy and repeatable way of positioning the tool to be sharpened at the desired angle in the sharpening guide. The guide has a shoulder on the right side for the consistent positioning of the cutting edge perpendicular to the rollers, a very useful feature that is missing on my old sharpening guide. For my casual woodworking, I don’t fuss too much over the cutting angle. As what’s his name said to his soon to be ex-girlfriend in what’s it’s name movie, “Frankie my dear, I don’t give a hoot.” Or something like that. Rather than spend a lot of time removing a lot of metal, I tend to adjust the sharpening guide to match the existing angle. A burr will form on the back of a cutting edge during sharpening. As I work through the series of coarse to fine grit plates / stones / sandpaper, I like to flip the cutting tool over and make a few strokes on the back side before moving on to the next finer grit. When finished with the plates etc. and with the cutting tool still in the guide, I like to hone the edge on a leather strop for an even sharper edge. If a cutting tool’s edge just needs a minor touch-up, the sharpening guide allows me to make a micro-bevel to quickly produce a sharp edge without resharpening the entire cutting face of a tool, wood chisels in particular. A micro-bevel just sharpens a tiny bit of the cutting edge’s face at a single degree or two of steeper angle. For example, if the angle of the cutting edge of a slightly dull tool is 25 degrees, the micro-bevel angle will be about 27 degrees. Use the angle fixture and the sharpening guide together. Place the cutting tool into the guide, use the marks on the angle fixture to position the cutting edge at an estimated 27 degrees in the guide, and clamp. Make a few light strokes over fine grit to verify the micro-bevel angle, adjust if needed, then finish the micro-bevel to the desired size using light strokes. There are lots of videos around for reference.

Nice case. Good metal parts -- typical Going make quality.I use this primarily for sharpening chisels. Unfortunately the knurled nut does not hold the chisel tight for very long. It loosens up after a couple of passes on a stone requiring setting the angle again. I've added back-to-back nuts on the opposite side. That does the trick. If it wasn't for that I would rate this product a 5.

When I ordered this sharpening system I didn't want to spend much as I'm not sure if I will pursue the hobby I am interested in(Kumiko) and thought that if I did enjoy Kumiko I could upgrade to better tools as I progressed. I don't believe upgrading will ever be necessary. When it arrived today I was surprised that it came in a nice case for storage and was packaged very well. The kit itself is very good quality, a lot higher quality than I expected, is easy to use and does an excellent job sharpening my chisels. it is easy to set up and works great. I was a little concerned that it wouldn't support an 1/8th" chisel but it does just fine. Overall a great kit for a very fair price.

If your chisel/blade fits, this thing works great. With this and some cheap diamond plates, I was able to get a bunch of rusty, chipped chisels sharp enough to shave with. The problem is, the jig does not work with short chisels or chisels with tapered sides. I'd say it worked with 75% of my chisels. The others I had to hand lap. I can get them sharp by hand, but not nearly as sharp as with the jig. The consistent angles of the jig make them crazy sharp, easy to get that paper thin burr.

I had just bought less expensive honing guide and after setting it up and using it there were a number of things that I did not like. it would not hold the plane iron very well. And the guides over the sharpening stone would tighten against the stone and I could not move the guide over the stone. tried for a bit and immediately decided to return it. I was not up to struggling with setup continuously.I decided to invest in this product I after a couple of uses I will say it is definitely worth the extra cost. It is accurate. Easy to setup .... the unit clamps the irons quite well with no fuss and it rolls on the sharpening stone extremely well. I am very happy that I spent the extra money for this quality guide. Parts are sturdy, made out of aluminum and feel really solid in the hand. The plastic case is a very nice feature as well. I would definitely recommend.
