It worked great for at least 2 years. I was able to track my Gallons Per Hour on my generator during an extended power outage in Texas. Can't replace the battery, so I lost all the accumulated hours. Good thing I still have pencil and paper! Just replaced it with a mechanical Hour Meter that connects to the 120VAC on the generator I'll never loose an hours now! -kjo

Easier to setup and operate than I expected. Have used identical product in the past so I purchased an again. Remains operational and accurate for a long time.

Once you realize the accuracy is +/- 20 rpm increments, it is easy to use for tuning a small engine. So if you are trying to tune a carburetor so a small engine runs at 3000 rpm, you will know you are there when it jumps between 2980 - 3020 rpm. Good luck trying to get it to land exactly on 3000 rpm. Simple, reliable, works great. And that's with a brand new carburetor and gaskets. Helped me diagnose a vacuum leak on my old carburetor.

Good size and install was a breeze. I gave it just 4 stars because the battery is not replaceable and I don't know how long the installed battery will last. Should be able to note hour reading and keep on top of maintenance when ever you check the oil level. A back light button would be nice, but not necessary.

The Hour Meter I received does not look like the meter in the picture. The meter pictured has it's wires within a cable and is Honda Branded. The product I received has it's wires free causing the installer to wrap them for a clean install. Realistically the product will operate just fine, however the double sided tape provided with it does't work well where installed on my outboard motor to plastic to plastic at temperatures below 150degrees.

I installed mine this afternoon and it works as advertised. Simple installation, I followed Ron's pictures and that made the install a breeze. I purchased the tac-brac on eBay ($20) to mount the meter on the side of the carb using the existing mounts, it looks factory installed. The hardest part was wrapping up all the extra wire. Follow Ron's suggestion and use the existing white wire clamp.

This is a great meter and provides the type of feedback you need for a generator - as in, you need to know the hours to service it! The meter itself was super easy to install. I guess previous models were more difficult, but this version requires no disassembly of the generator and is literally plug-and-play; the red wire clips tot he spark plug wire and the black wire goes to any screw on the motor. Next, just attach the meter to any flat place on the inside and you are done. Took me less than 5 minutes to get it up and running. My only issue is that this meter should come standard on all Honda generators and should not be an after purchase updrade.

Three reasons you'd buy it:1) You're fussy about the maintenance of any four-stroke engine, but your (or its) schedule makes it hard (if not impossible) to keep track of actual usage.2) You want a device that, when not running, constantly displays its tally of logged engine hours from the first usage onwards and also acts as a tachometer when running.3) Foolproof rugged reliability is more important to you than flexibility, ...so the provision of other modes and/or resetting via SWITCHES is out of the question. Why?Because such switches not only allow the ingress of contaminants, but also facilitate operational errors.Three reasons you wouldn't:1) You're not fussy about maintenance.2) You want the flexibility of transferring such a device from engine to engine and/or manually switching modes.3) You want to flush-mount something like this into a panel.I've given it five out of five stars because of the way it totally fulfils MY requirements, as you can see more clearly if you "roll over" the snapshots of its implementation inside my Honda EU20i motor/generator/inverter set. Some old reviews decry the lack of instructions being shipped with this item, but mine arrived (promptly) in its original Honda packet (Honda Genuine Part No: 08181-ENM-036AH) ...WITH a small sheet of simple but comprehensive "Meter Installation Instructions".Also, don't be deterred by misleading information out there that would have us believe "Brand X" engines require a matching "Brand X" meter.Any meter that's based on an internally-batteried clock and uses one wire for sensing spark and another (or a screw contact) for "earth" will work with any brand of motor. The only critical parameter is whether or not a given meter regards the engine as having completed four revs per spark (as this meter does for four-stroke engines) or just two ...and that parameter's only relevant in its tachometer mode. The same applies to supposed 50Hz versus 60Hz implementation of such meters with generators like mine. (Mine's the superb 240v 50Hz "Australian" Honda EU20i, its otherwise identical 110v 60Hz "Stateside brother" is Honda's EU2000i.)50Hz? ...60Hz? ...Fergeddaboutit. Totally irrelevant. The internal battery-powered (most probably quartz) clock counts time operating from the first spark to the last. That's all.In my view, this particular meter is really great precisely BECAUSE OF, rather than in spite of, its limitations. It's a rugged epoxy-sealed little box that automatically switches modes to simply and accurately "keep me honest" with oil, air-cleaner and overhaul maintenance ...and all I need do is operate my generator in the normal way.Whenever I open the hatch for that pre-start check of the dipstick, there it is. No buttons, no switchgear and no calculating.A truly elegant "five star" solution.
