According to Cocktail Records, a spring was first added to a strainer in 1889, and the Hawthorne strainer achieved its familiar form just a few years later.
The classic name as we know for "Hawthorne Strainer" — comes from a well-known manufacturer, which used to sell metal strainers with prongs.
A Hawthorne Strainer is a perforated disk with a spring positioned on a portion of the perimeter. And as liquid leaves the shaker, the spring functions as a filter.

4 Stabilizing Prongs
Our Hawthorne strainers feature 4 stabilizing prongs. The prongs can attach to a metal shaker’s end, which makes it easy to hold it in position the shaker or a mixing glass.

If you’re looking for a bar strainer this one is great. I got the cool charcoal gray color and it’s nice and strong. Looks elegant too on my bar!

We ordered this along with the shaker. I'm still waiting for our shaker to come because the way it was shipped it needed it be returned. This strainer is so well made and I put it in the dishwasher to clean it and it washed nicely. Looking forward to using it when our shaker arrives. Great quality!

This strainer works beautifully. I bought it along with the Homestia Boston style shaker and use them to make iced coffee every day. I love this strainer as it fits the shaker perfectly and has a tight coil with the perfect amount of opening for the drink to flow out while keeping the ice in. I’d buy it again and definitely recommend this Hawthorne strainer.
