"The Immemorial Tridentine Mass" is a VHS copy of the Solemn High Easter Sunday Latin Mass concelebrated at Chicago's Franciscan Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in 1941, filmed in black & white, and narrated by the late Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Beautifully celebrated (complete with choir, Austin organ and orchestra), this is the consumate prayer of the Roman Catholic Church, reverently offered in the fullness of the Church's ageless Latin tradition. This traditional Mass cannot be surpassed in its beauty! It also gives one an appreciation for the more intimate setting of the Mass today, offered in the vernacular with the celebrant(s) facing the congregation. Although Latin is a beautiful classical language that lends itself to musical setting more readily than English, it is no longer the language of universal communication it once was and as English is today. The Second Vatican Council authorized the use of English in the liturgy in 1963, obviating the need for two-columned missals with Latin-to-English translation at a time when most people do not know Latin. In addition, some of the ancient traditional rites and prayers of the Mass seen in this VHS were simplified or are no longer commonly observed, so this video gives one an appreciation of what we as Catholics have lost in contemporary worship. It is regrettable that this beautiful recording isn't more widely available. KEEP THE FAITH, Inc., should be commended for preserving this film. Hopefully the future may see it restored, made more widely available in DVD, and find its place in every Catholic home.
