About this item

  • 15N20 is a bright and acid resistant metal commonly used for forging with high carbon steels to draw out the contrast in Damascus patterned billets for knives and swords.
  • Its iron is alloyed with 0.75% carbon, 0.40% manganese, 2.0% nickel, and 0.10% phosphorus and silicon. (The number 15N6 may be written on the bar, this is the product SKU, not the nickel content)
  • Dimensions are 0.065" x 1-1/2" x 11-1/2".
  • Layer 15N20 with high carbon steels like 1080, 1095, 5160, etc. to forge Damascus, and etch with Ferric Chloride to bring out the contrast. The nickel in 15N20 resists the acid, remaining bright.

Arrived as expected. Clean, good steel. All pieces were marked with sharpie so you know what steel you are picking up out of the pile.

The steel is very thin and came rough cut without straight edges.

Sats 15N6, not classified as 15N20.... will adjust review after I use it.Finally got around to using this after how many years. Realistically there is no visual difference between the 15n6 as shown and a billet made with 15n20 that my father made.Only thing I could say is the Nicole color is a little more muted on final product but for some that seems to be preferred.
