My item arrived very oily and dirty. I understand when certain tools arrive lubricated but this one arrived very oily all over and dirty to the touch. I had to wipe it down thoroughly right out the box. Then, upon trying to use the tool, I discovered that the tap does not sit straight in the shaft. The main purpose of this tool is so that the tap is straight and it fails to do that. I tried several times to adjust it and still was not able to successfully use it.

Mine actually worked all the way up to 1/2-13". They may have updated things since other reviews on here.I originally purchased what I thought was the "smaller" one, the one listed as 0-#8. This is incorrect. The one labeled 0-#8 includes two identical collets that work for around 1/4" to 3/8" (about 6mm to almost 10mm). I needed to tap some M3, M4, and 6-32 threads and this was impossible with that size.I purchased a second 0-#8 just in case, as well as a 0-1/2". The second 0-#8 was identical to the first and completely useless for my needs BUT the 0-1/2" has all of the correct parts. The 0-1/2" has two different collets, I tested the small collet on the smallest tap I had, an M2, and it gripped it fine. The larger collet worked all the way up to a 1/2-13", as the description suggested and contrary to other reviews. Maybe they fixed the issue. One thing to note though, this is a very large tap handle. If you tried tapping small holes like M2, M3, #4-40 or #6-32, it will be exceptionally easy to snap a tap if you don't have an excellent feel for tapping. It provides you with WAY to much leverage for these smaller sizes so be careful. Some quality spiral point (NOT spiral flute) taps will be your friend on small through holes.

I'm always paranoid about starting a tap. It's too easy to start the tap off axis. After drilling a hole on my drill press I often replace the bit with a tap with moving the part. That yields a a perfect start. Recently I had a project where I needed to tap 16 holes in a place where the best I could do was drilling holes with a drill stand. It wasn't possible to swap the drill bit with a tap. I picked up a HHIP Self Aligning tool to tap the holes. It worked great. I'm probably going replace my old tapping procedure using the HHIP.

For a very straight threaded 4/40 screw hole, this did fantastic. Tolerance is good for tapping holes for short screws .75" with acceptable accuracy. A little heavy, gotta be careful removing a 4/40 from the new hole. Hey machinist! an aluminum version for small taps would be great.

I have a similar set with a square head. Has come in handy. Wish this set had a way to remove handle and drive it.
