A squirt of HALT II Dog Repellent into the face of a vicious dog stops him in his tracks. HALT II is temporarily painful, but medically safe. Effects of the spray usually wear off in a few minutes. Pressure-packed aerosol shoots streams up to 10 feet (3 meter). HALT II Dog Repellent canister clips onto belt or pocket. 1.5-oz. canister. Who knows more about dog attacks than the mailman? So what do the experts use to repel dog attacks? Well, the U.S. Postal Service has been using Halt II Dog Repellent since 1966. You might say they have been conducting field tests for over thirty years. Halt II products use Capsaicin, a naturally occurring extract of peppers, which, when sprayed in a dog's face, causes only temporary, but extreme discomfort for the dog. Think of it as attitude re-adjustment. Halt II stops him in his tracks, giving you time to move out of danger. Halt II's pressurized spray is accurate up to 10 feet. The attack is interrupted and the animal is distracted from the object of its aggression, thus giving valuable seconds to help the user retreat to a safe place.

It works, but I wasn’t able to get my phone use out of it because the handle jammed after the second use.

This is a great product that you hope you never have to use. Used this product twice. Once for my former occupation and recently when my chihuahua mix was attacked by two loose German Shepards. Had I not had this product, she wouldn’t have survived.

...by which I mean I used this spray on myself to test it out and understand what it feels like. If you can do so under safe conditions with proper medical supervision I highly recommend doing so. It really sucks, and will force your eyes shut and make it hard to breath, which is why the supervision of a medical professional is necessary, but it's valuable to know the weapons you might need to use in an emergency as intimately as you can. Unpleasant as it is, this spray is not as strong as a chemical irritant intended for use on people (I've been sprayed with one of those too) because it doesn't have to be: animals are very unlikely to fight through the discomfort to accomplish a goal they like a human might. And this spray is less potent by design, because if you deploy the stuff in an animal attack, when you're likely to be moving and don't have time to check the direction the wind is blowing, it's very possible some of it could splash back on you, or on your own dog. If that happens, you'll still have the advantage--assuming you also hit your target--because you wouldn't be so disabled that you couldn't move away from the attacking animal, nor would you own dog suffer any serious injury. On the other hand, this spray shouldn't be considered a substitute for a self-defense spray intended to be used against a human for the opposite reason: it isn't likely to stop a determined human attacker. Obviously, there are plenty of chem weapons on the market for that scenario, but if aggressive dogs with irresponsible owners are the threat you're most likely to encounter, this is hands down the best self-defense weapon to carry. And even if you don't test it on yourself, buy two cans so you can use one to practice quickly grabbing it, pressing the button, and hitting a target several feet away. You don't want your first time using it to be when some dog is trying to gut you like a stuffed squeaky toy.

I finally had to use this the past week when my dog and I were attacked by the rottweiler. I sprayed the dog several times in the face and, while it broke off the attack, it did not send the dog off to rub its face on the grass in pain. So just be aware if you buy this -- it burns on humans and small dogs, but doesn't send a big dog running.

This is a perfect product for when I walk my senior dog and get threatened by my neighbors unleashed dogs. Fortunately, I have never needed to use it, but knowing I have it in my pocket I feel a little safer.

There are loose dogs in my neighborhood. This gives me much needed peace of mind.
