About this item

  • Measures spark peak voltage, for finding primary and secondary coil faults
  • Displays ignition waveforms in real time, allowing for detailed analysis
  • Detects ramp time (or dwell angle), for diagnosis of timing issues and primary coil faults
  • Has chart and comparison functions, allowing the user to find intermittent issues
  • Works on all spark-ignition engines, from small 2-stroke engines with magnetos to modern cars with computer-controlled coil on plug systems

The GTC505 Engine Ignition Analyzer is a handheld instrument designed from the ground up for the diagnosis and performance measurement of all types of spark ignition systems, from conventional to the newest Coil on Plug in use. The GTC505 is capable of displaying and measuring the following in real time: secondary ignition waveform, primary coil current ramp time, dwell time, spark burn time and RPM. It also provides two innovative and unique display formats used to compare measurements between cylinders, and to look at data for hundreds of spark events over time in order to detect intermittent problems, misfires and other performance issues which are very difficult to detect using conventional scopes.

Awesome tool!!! my RECOMMENDATION FOR SELLER AND PRODUCT.Working well, fast diagnostic, easy for handling, display big enough, buttons well, also completely is quality build, intuitive software...and so on.Only one objection, extension cable to be included in kit, and maybe bigger box.

I have one that is six months old. I have used it several times and love it. It stopped working at six months. Will not power on. I ordered a replacement and got it next day. Brand new out of the box and it does the same thing. I sent it back for a return. I contacted the manufacturer about the first one, I'm sending it in for repair. The manufacturer is well aware of these issues. I will see what happens.

I could not give this tool a full 5-stars, because it's a bit pricey - most likely due to ZERO competition. To efficiently diagnose ignition problems especially on modern day coil-on-plug systems, this is a MUST HAVE tool. This tool will save you a lot of time!Navigating through all the options takes some getting used to.Pressing each button to cycle through several modes isn't intuitive, but it's not the worst. Most of the time, I use it to monitor spark voltage versus burn time, and display is either graph or real-time waveform. It can also function as an accurate tach, so you can ditch the (expensive) inductive timing light. The built-in, rechargeable battery lasts pretty long, and should outlast a whole days worth of use no problem. It comes with a dual-mode charger - U.S. version with 110VAC plug and USB.As of those writing, Amazon hasn't picked up the companion GTC-605, which does the same things for fuel injectors. Please Amazon - start selling the GTC-605 too!

This thing absolutely blows me away. I saw many youtube reviews on this, and people raved about it so much I thought i'd get one for my Outboard marine shop. Boy was I wrong.... its even better than advertised. Some people are unhappy that spark voltage jumps around a bit, but clearly just a misunderstanding of how ignitions work. Its not the reading that matters: only that all cylinders are within eachother's range. In addition, you will immediately tell if somethings wrong not so much by the voltage view, but by the "chart view" feature that basically acts like an oscilloscope to detect big voltage spikes (bad, btw). being able to set idle speeds in the water without a clumsy digital timing light is a MASSIVE plus for my line of work. Its just fantastic. Cylinder drop tests are a thing of the past. I find myself looking forward to a customer bringing in a motor with no spark on a cylinder or 2 just to use this thing!

Pros:This tool is very well designed with a robust case and solid plastic buttons that have a quality feel when pressed. The software is innovative and provides useful modes and views as described in GTC materials. It is great to have a tool that features probes for BOTH spark plug wires and coil on plug (COP) systems. When using "tachometer" mode, the RPMs are fairly stable both in chart and digital view. This is a really big plus.Cons:In chart view, the highly variable secondary spark voltage jumps around and you have to visually ascertain an average value. You can estimate an average kV by comparing real-time kV readings to the y-axis label values. It would be best if in digital view, the average kV was shown in addition to min and max. Not a serious problem though. Spark plug kV will jump around a lot because of real-time changes in resistance at the plug, timing changes, etc.On the tool I received, the BNC female connector for the gooseneck probe on top of the unit fits somewhat loosely and its weight can make it rock back and forth a bit. In my opinion this can eventually loosen the inner conductor sleeve of the female BNC and maybe lead to intermittent connections. BNC connectors can have this problem, for example when matching 75 ohm connectors to 50 ohm connectors. Fortunately conventional coax cables with BNC male connectors are lighter in weight than the gooseneck probe and they do seem to fit more snuggly. You can get a 3 to 6 ft flexible coax cable with male and female BNC connectors and fix the probe to the end of the cable to use as a test wand. Alternatively, GTC makes a 2 meter flexible coax cable that accepts all the probe tips, and gets around the problem of a loose fitting gooseneck probe. It also has a locking spark plug wire probe. The part number is GTC505-CSC and you can order it directly from GTC for a reasonable price. If your gooseneck probe fits loosely to the BNC connector on top, I would definitely get a coax extension cable or the GTC505-CSC. Amazon should stock this accessory. Otherwise it appears to be a very fine tool and worth the cost.
