From the Manufacturer

GRK Trim RT Composite screws have the smallest screw head available with lengths from 1-1/4-Inch to 5-Inch. Most material splitting is prevented because of the Trim head screw's exceptionally small head and the W-cut thread design. Pre-drilling is only necessary if the building materials limitations require a pilot hole to be drilled, as in hardwoods like Mahogany and Ipe'. GRK has modified its innovative FIN/Trim head screw to include reverse threading under the head to help it disappear beneath the surface of composite deck material, reducing or eliminating the dimple that sometimes appear in composite decking.

It's not all that often you need this specialty screw. But when you do, THIS is the ticket. Look closely at the two-stage threads, and the sharp point. For careful trim or furniture work, especially in hardwoods, you'll feel awfully clever when this screw fills the bill. Pilot holes aren't necessary -- though, truth to tell I use them anyway in some cases. The resulting screw head hole is so discreet you can often get away without using putty. I'm a fan.

I pre-drill the holes when I use these, and they sink right in. They do bore their own hole if you want, but I just find it easier to drill a starter hole. They anchor tight and I've not seen any screws come loose. They work for me. I'm not sure what the "Sheerness" rating means, so I didn't rate it. None of these have ever broken off when I used them. If memory serves, the pack comes with a drill-driver bit. I've only used these on Trex decking, so I don't know if these would perform on wooden planks or other materials.

I bought these to install some red oak boards onto some step landings and they worked perfectly. Small heads but held the boards down well and easy to fill with wood putty. Smaller heads means smaller fill holes so they're less noticeable. I've bought two more sizes since. I pre-drilled to make sure there was no tear out but they self tap easily too since I've used them elsewhere where pre-drilling wasn't a factor. Very pleased.

Except structural work, of course. So easy to drive with or without a pilot hole. Then counter set it and the hole almost disappears!

I thought that these screws would help hold down hardwood flooring and I was right. They sink far enough in the tounge. They are only being used on the floor joists, rest of the spaces I'm using the nailer.

These screws are fantastic to use on a composite deck. They drill easily and have a smallish head. Also, I find that the torx head is much less prone to stripping than some of the other composite screws that use a square head. I'm definitely going to use these in the future.

I bought these to attack some trim to a pet door I cut out of a hollow core door. I wanted something that would be long enough to go thru the door and into the piece of trim on the other side without leaving a big hole or having to drill a countersink hole. The drill bit tip even made it so that I didn't need to drill a pilot hole before driving, I did experiment on a scrap piece before doing this and didn't get any splitting. These worked perfectly for me and now I've been looking for other places I can use them. The counter thread at the top can make it hard to remove them from the trim, but does keep it firmly in place, I'll update when I use them for anything else.
