I should have got a signal into my arduino ranging 0 - 1023, I was only getting 90 - 650. I tried multiple analog inputs and got the same results. Swapped sensors with someone else in class and had similar results but different because these sensors are all trash.

Used two of these distance sensors in a school project to get position (X,Y) on a grid by measuring the distance from walls setup around the grid. Make sure the sensors point at a large target that is reflective such as white computer paper or something. Easy to use, just connect the supply and a cap across the supply lines and the output is an analog voltage 0 to 3.3V that can hookup to micro ADC. Keep in mind you need to linearize the analog voltage out of the sensor because the voltage is not directly proportional to distance. Equations for doing this can be easily found online and it worked awesome for my project easily achieving sub cm precision. Have now bought 4 of these items and are trying to use them in other projects. Recommend to anyone looking for a cheap and dirty solution to distance sensing.

Found a few examples for this on an arduino and got it working with a few modifications.

10-80cm Sensor works but I didn't have any luck getting distances past 40cm (aimed at piece of wood). I'm going to try an ultra-sonic sensor and if that doesn't work out I'll try another of these IR sensors rated for a longer range.
